In order for children to breathe fresh air, they were placed in cages like this. At the end of the 19th century, doctors began recommending that people living in urban apartments regularly take their children outdoors. It was believed that this would strengthen the child's immune system, improve overall health and give vigor. The famous pediatrician Luther Emmett Holt advised simply placing a basket with a baby near an open window. But some parents have gone further..

In certain Nordic countries like Denmark, Findland, Norway and Sweden, a long-standing tradition from the early 20th century involves allowing babies to nap outdoors during cold weather. This custom is based on the belief that exposing infants to fresh air, even in freezing temperatures, can strengthen their immune systems and promote overall health.
