The smarter you are, the more difficult it is to answer a question. Because you know so many different answers that all apply, that you are not sure which to give to satisfy the source of the question. Puts “ignorance is bliss” into perspective.

In other words "you wouldn't understand a complete explanation, so I can't explain it to you; the best I could do is give you a crude analogy". However, it's good to keep asking "why" until you get to a "don't know" & everyone should be intellectually curious enough to do so.

Years ago I contacted Christopher Sykes, the man who filmed and produced "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out" where this clip is from. We had a very long chat about Feynman. Christopher very kindly archived all the footage he had of Feynman on DVD and sent it to me.

This applies not only to magnetism, but to virtually everything. Scientists do not know why particular fundamental interactions exist. They do not even know what an electron actually is. Essentially, all we know is that there are certain observable, repeatable effects that we have agreed to describe using specific terms. But it is impossible to say what truly lies behind them.

Funny this video popped up on my feed this morning. Last night reading a book to my 3 year old daughter she asked why probably 100 times. I kept answering, even my wife laughed at how patient I was answering each question. His point here that "you have to be in a framework that allows something to be true" strikes me about the innocence of children & why they constantly ask why. They have no framework yet, answering each question is building that framework teaching them things about the world that we as adults take so easily for granted. She also asks the most questions when we're reading. If you're a parent of young kids, I can't emphasize enough that you can't read too many books to your kids. Let them be inquisitive & be patient answering their questions, it's a beautiful thing watching them learn and try to process the world.

He hated this question. He hated it because the answer, the only answer, is this: Because God said so. People literally spend their lives trying to disprove God even as He surrounds us with the Truth of His being. Then, at death, they learn how expensive it was to try that.

I've watched this exact clip many times over the years, and at first I found it irritating and evasive, even condescending. But I've changed my opinion over time. He left all of us knowing more about the world than we did coming in. Really powerful.

I think much of the disagreement comes from confusing what science is with what we expect it to be. Science is, above all, a method of inquiry. It is arguably the most successful framework we've developed for understanding nature. At its core, however, it is descriptive rather than ultimate. It builds models that explain observations, make predictions, and can be tested and refined through evidence. That doesn't make science "just" descriptive. Those models have allowed us to uncover remarkably consistent patterns in nature and formulate laws that describe the universe with extraordinary accuracy. But science is not infallible, nor does it claim to be. Genuine science requires us to question every conclusion continuously. Every model remains provisional, open to revision if better evidence or a better explanation emerges. So when someone asks why magnets repel, science can describe the mechanisms involved with great precision. Whether that is the final "why" or simply the deepest explanation currently available is another question entirely. Newtonian mechanics, relativity, and quantum physics are not immutable truths; they are our best descriptions so far. Tomorrow, a deeper theory may unify or even replace parts of them. That is not a weakness of science—it is its greatest strength. Unlike dogma, science is willing to improve itself.

He was a Genius. He actually gained a different side of understanding while he was describing repulsion. He wanted to go deeper, you can almost see him reaching for a piece of chalk….he would then go looking for a blackboard. He wants to write equations. We need Him now.

It makes perfect sense though like he did answer the question iron molecules run a certain direction so when you line them up like we have devices that create magnets by lining up all the particles in a certain direction, does that make sense perfectly answered the question he reminds me a lot of reading Crowley… many of the questions he asks are some of the greatest is extremely intelligent and understands his audience… he’s like I can’t get into advanced mechanics with you because we ultimately don’t understand the answer to these questions so if you were a student, I’d explain that to you but there’s no way I can explain if you like as a common language and understanding For example, Crowley uses a reference where he says that like if you ask a scientific person like what temperature does water boil like we would say it depends on like atmospheric pressure on other circumstances we could be sitting in a chair and say that we’re sitting still and we haven’t moved in three hours, but ultimately like we’re on the spinning ball it’s moving through space or reading a sun so we’ve moved like thousands of miles it’s perspective… Why is a question… the word quest is in the word question for a reason like you’re trying to discover something you’re going on a journey. You’re on a quest. You’re on the path up the tree of life… How many people go through life just unquestioning except what is given to them were perceiving reality from their experiences and then equator their perspective with everyone else’s Gravity and magnetic fields are not understood there are entire portions of the Milky Way galaxy that when looked at in different spectrums it’s like everything is perspective. He explains perfectly well imo the reason why magnets repel… … because the do that’s “why”.. What do you mean “why” 93. 93/93 666

This actually is a good reframe on how to build up to the why questions. Why questions, require either knowledge or an understanding of your prior experiences in order to answer.

This is more about the frustration of explanation itself than it is about the issue at hand. It took him a few seconds to actually answer the question when he explained why your hand can't go through your arm, and a magnet just magnifies that effect further from its surface. Like anything else, one can further ask why does the mechanic of the explanation exist. But it's a non-issue. It's not that we blindly accept certain things, it's that we understand them already. All these things can be reduced down to the laws of physics at which point we ask why the laws of physics exist, at which point we get into theology or simply saying we can't and do not know.

A pilot put a passenger jet down on a river and got every person on board off alive. Within days, investigators were asking him what he had eaten for lunch. He told them a tuna sandwich. Then they asked whether he had had a candy bar. Whether he had had a soda. That is not small talk. There is a precise reason those 2 questions could have ended his career, and Tom Hanks lays it out in about 4 sentences. The pilot is Chesley Sullenberger. Hanks played him, spent time with him first, and says the man walked him through the entire script telling him which parts never happened. As Hanks was told it, the stake was money. If the board could establish that the pilot did 1 thing wrong, the insurance on an airplane he puts at 17 million dollars would not have to be paid out. Every question in that room was built for that. It went on for the better part of a year. In the film it takes days, because films cannot afford a year. What was happening to him has a name in psychology. Baruch Fischhoff described it in 1975 and called it creeping determinism. Once you know how something ended, the ending looks like it was always coming, and every road you did not take looks like it was sitting right there, clearly marked, the whole time. Which is why the question "why did you not do this instead" is close to unanswerable. It is asked by people who know the ending, to a person who did not have it. There is a second effect underneath, well documented in aviation and in medicine. The person at the centre of the investigation frequently comes out of it in worse condition than the people he saved. Researchers gave that person a name. He is the second victim. Hanks is 67 when he says this, and what he admires is not the landing. It is a distinction he makes in 1 sentence near the end, and it is the whole reason he told the story at all. He saved everyone on that plane. Then he spent a year proving he had not eaten a candy bar.

A Stanford neuroscientist has spent thirty years arguing that you have never made a decision. Not one. Every choice you are proud of and every mistake you still think about was the output of biology you did not pick and cannot see. He teaches an entire course on why, and it is free. The man is Robert Sapolsky, who spent decades in Kenya living among wild baboons. He opens with a man who woke up one morning as somebody else. Same brain, same family, same job. One gene had changed. He describes the case and leaves it unresolved, because the point is not the answer. The point is that you already reached for one. Then he goes after the way we reach. His argument is that every explanation you have ever heard for why a person did something is broken in the same way. It is genetic. It is cultural. It is hormones. It is childhood. Each of those is a bucket, and the buckets do not exist anywhere in nature. They exist because universities have separate departments and separate corridors, and the corridors decided what counts as an explanation. Nothing interesting happens inside a bucket. Everything interesting happens where two of them touch, and almost nobody is trained to look there. He asks the room about free will, about God, about evil, about whether biology explains who becomes religious, and whether things that happened before you were born shape your politics thirty years later. Then he refuses to answer any of it, and tells them what they will be able to judge for themselves in ten weeks. The lectures run through aggression, depression, language, schizophrenia, sexuality, and why any of it differs between two people at all. Twenty five hours. One lecture hall. Free.

Huang: “The outcome that I seek, that I hope for, is that I die on the job instantaneously.” That is not a figure of speech. That is a man telling you he has already decided how this ends. No retirement. No transition plan. No golden years on a beach somewhere tallying what he built. He wants to be mid-sentence in a meeting the moment his heart gives out. And when you understand why, it changes how you see everything Nvidia is doing. Huang: “This is not a once in a lifetime experience. This is a once in a humanity experience.” Once in a lifetime means others have lived through something comparable. He is saying no one has. Not Edison. Not Ford. Not anyone at Bell Labs or Xerox PARC. The deployment of artificial intelligence at this scale, at this speed, with this much consequence has no precedent in the history of the species. Every meeting is a transfer. Every conversation is a download. The goal is not to be the smartest person in the building. The goal is to make the building smarter than any one person in it. That is why he does not need a succession plan. If you spend every day making the people around you capable of running without you, the org never notices the moment you are gone. Your fingerprints are in how they think. But he is not planning to leave. Huang: “I really don’t want to die. I have a great life. I have a great family. I have really important work.” No drama. No existential spiral. Just a man who looked at death and filed it under problems that can wait. There is still too much to build. The people planning their exit strategies are playing a different game than Jensen Huang. He is not building a company he can walk away from. He is building one that outlasts his heartbeat because every person inside it already thinks in patterns he installed. That is not a death wish. In 1983 the BBC put a reporter in front of a man who spent his lunch breaks in a pub he did not drink in. He went for the arcade machine. He beat each new game within 2 or 3 days, and the pub only changed them once a month, so he went home and worked at the keyboard 20 to 40 hours a week, frequently straight through the night. The programme called these people addicts. Watching it now, the label is the least interesting thing in it, because 1 of the 3 people interviewed accidentally explains the entire mechanism. His name is Graham Hawker, and he is asked a simple question. What is the actual thrill of playing against a computer. His answer is the only real piece of psychology in the film. The machine is perfect. It never makes an error. Therefore anything that goes wrong is unambiguously yours, and you are not playing a game at all, you are trying to prove you are as flawless as the thing opposite you. That is a textbook description of a variable schedule of reinforcement married to a system that never gives you an excuse. Skinner showed decades earlier that unpredictable rewards produce far more persistent behaviour than reliable ones. What Hawker adds is the part Skinner's pigeons could not: an opponent so consistent that blame has nowhere to go except inward. There is no bad referee, no unfair bounce, no bad day. Every loss is evidence about you. The first man is asked whether he will ever use the program he is spending 6 months of his life writing. His answer starts with 2 words that make the reporter laugh. Asked why he is doing it then, he replies in 6 words, and it is a question, not an answer, and it is the oldest defence there is for doing something useless extremely well. His wife is sitting there for all of this. She describes lying half awake at 5 in the morning and hearing a sound from the spare room. She reproduces the sound out loud. Then she says a sentence about a room of his own that is far heavier than anything the reporter manages in 8 minutes. The third person is a woman running a sweet shop, and she produces the turn that makes the film worth the time. The computer collapsed 4 or 5 hours of nightly paperwork into seconds. What she did with the recovered hours is not what anybody expects, and she lays the evidence out on the shop counter for the camera. By the end of 1982 there were roughly 700 thousand of these machines in British homes, and salesmen were selling them on the grounds that they would help children with schoolwork. The reporter closes on the thing the salesmen were leaving out. 42 years later it is the only prediction in the film that landed.
