A beautiful moment between Virgil & Kanye where everything comes full circle.

In 2010, Abloh took on the role of creative director at Donda, Kanye’s creative agency.

Following this role, Virgil was the art director for the iconic album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Virgil was the one who picked the American visual artist, George Condo, to paint several covers for the album. Condo had this to say about the creative mind of Virgil: “Virgil makes things happen, intrinsically knowing that his talent is to move into an electric field and create a transcendent art experience for our people.”

Virgil was back again after Kanye asked him to be the artistic director for the 2011 album, Watch the Throne. Virgil helped design the cover of the album alongside Givenchy’s then-creative director, Riccardo Tisci. The year after, Virgil also helped with the cover of Cruel Summer.

In 2022 Louis Vuitton referenced the Cruel Summer cover for one of their SS23 jackets.

Around 2012 Virgil launched his first brand, Pyrex Vision. He purchased deadstock clothing from Ralph Lauren for $40 and screen-printed designs on the clothes.

The last cover Virgil helped Kanye with was Yeezus in 2013. There was a total of 10 different designers that helped make the cover. Virgil described the cover as an “open casket” that marked the death of the physical CD format.

Kanye visited the “Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech” exhibition at the High Museum of Art. The museum displayed a sculpture of the Yeezus cover.

Both Kanye and Virgil went their own ways into the fashion industry. In 2013 Virgil rebranded Pyrex Vison into Off-White, while Kanye went and signed a deal with Adidas.

Going all the way to 2018, Virgil Abloh was named the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collections.

Later the next year, Kanye was in attendance for the Louis Vuitton men’s spring 2019 show in Paris.

Sadly on November 28th, 2021, Virgil Abloh lost his battle with cancer. He was honored at the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2022 Men’s Collection show in Miami.
