It decodes intended speech motor commands from the speech production areas of the motor cortex—not random thoughts or inner monologue. The system is trained on the specific neural patterns of attempting to articulate words. Thinking the hard r or “damn she chopped” while deliberately intending “I love you” produces different signals; only the intentional speech attempt gets decoded into output.
