One fascinating fact about the "bomb in a suitcase" plot to kill Adolf Hitler is tied to the July 20, 1944, assassination attempt, known as Operation Valkyrie. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a key figure in the German resistance, smuggled a briefcase containing a bomb into a meeting at the Wolf's Lair, Hitler’s headquarters in East Prussia. The bomb was made of plastic explosives with a pencil detonator, a British design supplied to the resistance. Stauffenberg placed the suitcase under the conference table near Hitler and left the room under the pretense of making a phone call. However, the plan failed partly because the suitcase was moved behind a thick table leg, which absorbed much of the blast. When the bomb detonated, it killed four people and injured others, but Hitler survived with only minor injuries—thanks to that table leg and the open windows dissipating the explosion’s force. This near-miss led to brutal reprisals, with over 5,000 people executed in the aftermath.
