In Geneva, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Wenyen Gabriel reflected on why the promise made 75 years ago through the Refugee Convention still matters. Protection changed his life. Today, he's using his voice with UNHCR to help make sure more people forced to flee have the same chance to find safety and build a future.

A simple but powerful principle: people forced to flee should not be left without protection. 75 years after the Refugee Convention was adopted, it remains a lifeline for millions of refugees. Today, world leaders gathered at #UNGA to recommit to the life-saving document.

75 years ago, the world made a promise to people forced to flee. Nobel Laureate Nadia Murad spoke about the space where that promise lives, and the continued action needed so everyone forced to flee can find safety and protection.

America is facing a spiritual crisis. And to fix it, we have to start by restoring the promise of the American dream. People need hope.

In Geneva, where the Refugee Convention was signed 75 years ago, we renewed its promise today. Faith leaders, Nobel laureates, athletes, artists, businesses, refugee advocates and many others shared one message: protecting people forced to flee is a responsibility we all share.

For so many people, Pope Francis pointed to the light overcoming the darkness. As Christians continue to celebrate Easter, we remember the promise of hope, the potential of renewal and the possibility of a better future.

What a match. Spain played with passion and determination from start to finish, and they earned this historic victory. Argentina also gave a strong performance and showed why they are one of football’s great nations. Congratulations to both teams for giving fans a memorable final. I also commend FIFA, and the people of the United States, Mexico and Canada for hosting a wonderful tournament that brought the world together through football. Football is truly the world’s game. It has a unique way of bringing people together through a shared love of sport. We look forward to Jamaica’s return to football’s biggest stage. Until then, we celebrate excellence, sportsmanship and the joy that this beautiful game continues to bring to millions around the world.
