Back in the area where I grew up for a couple of exciting days later in the week (more of that to come…) but had the opportunity today to drive around the area to some places I remember from many years ago. I lived in Humberside (as it was called then) from 1973 to 1983 during which time we took regular trips to view the construction of The Humber Bridge which was, when completed, the longest single span suspension bridge in the world. It was amazing to see this incredible structure being built and I still marvel at the size of it today. One of the notable features is the shape of the road deck. It is very similar in design to an aircraft’s wing. The aerofoil section is designed to make the bridge stable during high winds. This design was used following lessons learned from earlier, unsuccessful designs such the Tacoma Narrows bridge. I still find it hard to believe I watched this bridge being built over 50 years ago!
