No one cares about your totalitarian shit. Get over it.

Converting subjective heuristics into moral absolutes is the blueprint of a technical autocrat. Learn the difference between a guide and a law, Bob.

My copy just came in the mail yesterday. Really enjoying it so far.

Why do most programming authors and podcasters avoid PHP as if it's a deprecated disease that still runs half the internet 😀

It’s a book every AI should read.

If only they could retain what they read. Unfortunately, for now, that’s up to the humans. And perhaps it always will be.

Excited to read! Next we need an agent skill for agentic clean code.

Uncle Bob Martin's profile picture
Uncle Bob Martin5 months ago

I don’t think that’s an agent skill. I think it requires humans in the loop.

Theron James's profile picture
Theron James5 months ago

I think the human’s role is critical. The question is where in the stack that human discipline lives. If code is the artifact, then yes, humans in the loop on code quality. But if the durable artifact is the spec and verification layer and code is a compilation target agents regenerate, then the human discipline is in spec precision, not code cleanliness. The agent skill is in structuring code for agent consumption between regenerations. Wrote this up here:

Hold on, you did a full rewrite? The sequence of words that makes good software engineers shudder.

Uncle Bob Martin's profile picture
Uncle Bob Martin10 months ago

<grin>. I’d say it’s an 85+% rewrite. But never fear, the first edition is still running and you can run the two in parallel for awhile while you gradually phase the first edition out.

does this book contain any sort of proof / measure system to show that 'clean' code actually improves things or we all should believe You because your hairs are white?

Uncle Bob Martin's profile picture
Uncle Bob Martin10 months ago

When you find, or write, a book that offers such a proof, please let us all know. In the mean time you might want to pay attention to those of us who have been coding for many decades. Or not. Your choice.

Didn‘t know that you will ship a new version of clean code. It was one of my first books and it defined how I approached technology in general. I‘m glad to see you having so much fun and also produce so much valuable insights to bridge old world vs new world.

Yo uncle Bob, if I wanna do type-checking at test-time in C, how do I go about that workflow bro?

@koishiterukaren You're awesome!!! That juggling makes me happy. I'm curious if you've tried the recent xai Build CLI with GROK. I guess it just released in May and looks like an upgrade is coming any day now. I got a $30/first 3 months deal so I'm going to start playing around with it...

Uncle Bob Martin's profile picture

@koishiterukaren I've tried it. Codex is still a bit better, but I expect that to change.

You updated the SRP meaning in the CA book and you were complaining about this, maybe you can write it more explicitly in the new edition 👍🏻

Gm...I like the emphasis on mentioning that even not agreeing all the times , you had a nice debate 😂 Nowadays everyone considers a good debate has and attack or an offense witch is kind of meeehh and unproductive... signs of maturity is knowing you can have good conversation with someone you not always agree on!

Civilization depends upon civil debate. Funny how that works out. Currently, our civilization is headed towards a disaster. The only way to prevent that is civil discourse.

Im in my middle age crisis right now … but seems the norm now is not being inconvenient wich perpetuates the wrong doing from the ones that can exploit doubt. …Thats a great balcony view!…can’t wait to get to my mountain house has a full time job 😂

I bought first version in 2011. How much of C does have the 2nd edition? Btw, have you read Hacker's Delight?

been writing context docs for claude code with wireframes and intent sections alongside tests. agent output quality jumps massively when it knows what done looks like, not just what the steps are

It'd be nice if some of these coding tools wrote clean code. Well, maybe not. One way to stay employed is to put one's shingle out that they can tame even the most convoluted Claude Code incarnations and Codex crapola. Hmmm.
