‼️ Heartbreaking video from Nepal. Villages overrun by raging flood. Hundreds of people are missing. The cause: Likely due to a Glacier Lake or dam in the mountain’s above bursting free from a snow-rock landslide, with water cascading down the hills. It took place on the Nepal-China border - that was initiated by a 4.4 Earthquake. That’s where the evidence points now, and if so, it’s called a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). They are more common now-a-days as glaciers continue to melt and hold more water. See image below.

📍Rasuwa District, Nepal. A major sudden flash flood has entered Rasuwa from the Tibet side through the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal. The exact trigger is still under investigation. Officials and hydrologists are examining the possibility of a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) or another sudden high-altitude flood event in Tibet; satellite observations reportedly show significant rainfall on the Tibetan side.

🌊 How did the Nepal flood become this devastating? A sudden surge in the river, likely intensified by heavy rainfall and flash flooding, sent a massive wall of water downstream overwhelming the bridge in seconds. 🇳🇵 #NepalFlood #NepalFloods #Nepal #Rasuwa

This is what a GLOF looks like in motion: a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, sometimes called a Jökulhlaup (Icelandic for "glacier run"). Basically: meltwater builds up in a basin trapped against or beneath a glacier. Eventually the ice dam gives way, and all that pent-up water rushes out; sometimes over the course of a day or more. At Columbia Glacier, this happens almost like clockwork, roughly once a year, with the lake taking about a day and a half to fully drain. No roads, no homes in the path; so it mostly happens quietly, without anyone downstream even noticing. Compare that to Juneau, where GLOFs along the Mendenhall River actually threaten homes and residents in the valley each year. Serious flood-mitigation work has gone into protecting the community there. Watching that volume of water suddenly break free from under a glacier is still humbling. Glaciers aren't the frozen, unmoving things people picture. They're alive, shifting, releasing; a reminder that even "solid" landscapes are anything but static. Prayers for Nepal #Nepal #FloodVideo

This simplest animation explains what a GLOF is and how it can trigger devastating floods in minutes. From yesterday’s Nepal flood to Dharali UK last year across the Himalayas, better monitoring of glacial lakes and timely early warnings could have prevented many deaths.#Nepal

Before and after. Here’s the first of two amazing videos showing one of nature’s great events that you’ve never heard of: a GLOF (glacial lake outburst flood). It just happened in Alaska and it’s unlike anything else. 1/2 🎥 Leigh Coates

I believe this deadly mega flash flood / debris flow in Nepal was caused by a glacier break and instantaneous massive flood of mass down the river gorge

Hundreds are missing, and many are feared dead after a massive flash flood hit the Nepal-China border on Wednesday. A wall of water obliterated infrastructure, sweeping hundreds of people away. A glacial lake outburst above the Bhotekoshi River may have caused the flooding and destruction, Shailendra Thapa, a spokesman for the Armed Police Force, said, but AccuWeather meteorologists pinpoint an earthquake in the area as the root cause.

Yesterday's catastrophic flood was caused by a glacial lake outburst. Tracing the origin of the Trishuli River, which flows along the Nepal-China border, three glacial lakes can be found in China. It is widely suspected that one of these three lakes has burst.
