U.S. company Powerus has unveiled the Matrix Fold, a modular and foldable FPV drone reportedly selected for the Pentagon’s Drone Dominance program. I had a good meeting with U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal. I’m grateful for their participation in the Ukraine Recovery Conference, as well as in the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing. It is important that the United States joined this format – for the first time. Our current priority is bolstering air defense. Russia is aiming to launch attacks involving up to a thousand drones at once. That is why it is crucial to scale up protection, particularly by investing in interceptor drones. We also discussed the continued supply of weapons from the United States and joint weapons production. We are ready for different formats, including purchasing a large defense package from the United States, jointly with Europe, to protect lives. We also touched on the bill introduced by Senators Graham and Blumenthal regarding additional restrictive measures against Russia and those supporting its war effort. Without a doubt, this is exactly the kind of leverage that can bring peace closer and make sure diplomacy is not empty. Update on LAT Aerospace Our first uSTOL technology demonstrator is ready. Today, we have a fully-electric, fixed-wing UAV, built from scratch and almost ready for flight. To make this possible in just a few months, we built our entire flight lab from scratch. Every bench, every tool, every fixture designed to push the aircraft closer to flight every single day. This aircraft is designed to takeoff in 40 meters (thanks to a massive CL of 5 which is more than 2x of what you see on most aircraft). Endurance of 60 minutes. With a range of being able to cruise autonomously from Mumbai to Pune. Ground rolls done. As I type this, we are pushing hard to get the bird in the air. Hopefully it doesn't blow up. Either way, I promise videos of our attempt sometime over the next few weeks. We have learnt so much over the last few months, and I am sure that there are a lot of hard learnings yet in store for us. Our research on hybrid-electric propulsion is already in full swing, and we’ve also started building a team to begin development on our own gas turbine engines. The competition between strike systems and air defense/interceptor systems continues to evolve on both sides. In response to Russia’s growing use of jet-powered Geran-4 loitering munitions and Geran-5/Banderol cruise missiles, Ukraine has begun developing jet-powered interceptor drones. The aim is to address a class of faster aerial threats that can be difficult for conventional propeller-driven interceptors to engage. Ukraine has also used Bars jet-powered drones in at least one strike campaign against Moscow. Their numbers are still believed to be limited, with propeller-driven drones making up the majority of Ukraine’s long-range strike fleet. This highlights a broader issue for Russia: the need to develop and deploy compact interceptor drones before faster targets become more widespread. The challenge is not simply intercepting them, but doing so economically. Traditional air-defense systems and MANPADS can engage such targets, but using them against relatively inexpensive strike drones can be difficult to justify economically. One potentially relevant example comes from Iran. Several years ago, Iran developed and deployed the 358 missile, a specialized system intended to engage UAVs. It is a subsonic weapon with a reported speed of around 700 km/h, an infrared seeker, and a turbojet engine, with a claimed engagement range of up to 100 km. Its design reflects a different approach to countering relatively slow aerial targets, without relying on the speed and cost associated with conventional high-performance surface-to-air missiles. The missile has demonstrated its effectiveness, having shot down a number of U.S. and Israeli UAVs. This is not necessarily an argument for simply copying the 358. The more important point is anticipating what types of drones may be heading toward Russian cities in the future and developing an interceptor that is capable of engaging them while remaining cheaper than the strike systems it is designed to counter.

Americans are not ready to watch sons and daughters hunted by FPV drones. Some may not like this post, and that’s OK. Some may see this as being a “panican,” and that is also OK. My tolerance for American blood being spilled is very, very low. But this needs to be said: If you have paid any attention to the war in Ukraine, you will know how drone warfare has escalated. You will have an understanding of the sophistication of the Ukrainians and Russians in their pursuit of hunting and killing each other with human-guided robots strapped with explosives. We know Russia and Iran share military ties; hell, the most common form of long-range standoff munition used to target Ukrainian infrastructure is an Iranian-designed Shahed drone. Now, are the Iranians as sophisticated as the Russians? No. But will a ground action result in grainy videos of Americans being hit by FPV drones? Almost certainly. Could the deployment of ground forces to the Gulf be a feint? Sure, it could be, but this point extends beyond Iran. The U.S. needs to be ready to counter the drone menace. I won’t pretend to know the inner machinations of the Joint Chiefs, the White House, or President Trump, but with the destruction of an E-3 Sentry on the runway, it has become absolutely clear the U.S. armed forces have not scaled their ability to handle drones. I don’t know what the answer here is, but I haven’t seen this point brought up at the frequency it deserves. It needs to be said. We are not ready for footage of American soldiers and Marines cowering in their last moments, set to some upbeat pop song or some cleric screaming praises to Allah.
