We all want to be able to walk down our high streets without fear. No threats, no stripped shelves, no shop workers pinned against walls. What we want and need is effective policing on our high streets and an increased law enforcement presence. Antisocial behaviour, of which shoplifting is a critical component, is arguably one the most dangerous element on our streets. If we lose control of that, gangs and drug dealers take over. Shoplifting not only negatively impacts businesses by causing losses but also creates a hostile environment for shop workers, potentially leading to violence. Tackling shoplifting should be a priority.
