Didn't the umpire at the the bowlers end though start removing the cap from his waist ? He was not even watching the play so by definition it was dead ? The umpires seem to have gotten away with any criticism really ?

Pretty sure if the umpire goes to hand the bowler his cap he thinks the over is finished

The on-field umpires clearly did think the ball was dead - otherwise (a) they’d have seen what happened (he was obviously out so no need to go upstairs) and (b) the umpire at the bowler’s end would not have been handing over caps and glasses. They just bottled it

Technically he was out.... but was the law formulated with the Bairstow scenario in mind ? I very much doubt it. And that is where the so called 'The spirit of cricket' comes in.

The umpires were not even looking they were getting the caps for the bowler etc so why did they not say so

No one is disputing that it was out, the point being even the umpire had starting walking and Bairstow himself had stepped into his crease before walking to Stokes, it was wrong of the Australians to take advantage
