James Brown was a major contributor to social dance and popularized several fad dances in the 1970s, including the Mashed Potato, the Boogaloo, and the Good Foot. The songs that accompanied these dances were "(Do the) Mashed Potatoes", "Do the Boogaloo".

I was lucky enough to see him in 1969 and also about 1978. The second time was in a very small hotel type venue. Way awesome!
