A decade ago at Disney, Warner, or Paramount, this would have required a seven-figure budget and a full VFX team. Here's how AI is revolutionizing indie filmmaking, and how I turned a 2AM inspiration into a 90-second dream project 🧵👇

BEGINNING I started learning Midjourney in January of this year, preparing for the future of AI video. I expected we were a year away from production-ready AI video capabilities. I couldn't have been more wrong. 👇

CATALYST My friend Chris Perna (IG @chrisperna) gave me crucial advice: focus on an emotional, story-driven project rather than isolated clips. Halloween sparked my imagination – from Nosferatu walking modern streets, to immortality, to transhumanism, to Pinocchio's desire to be real. The story evolved into a cautionary tale of transhumanism, exploring loss and mortality. The message became clear: just because we can, doesn't mean we should. 👇

STORY The next morning, I woke at 2AM with this narrative burning in my mind: A genius transcends flesh, transferring his "mindsoul" into a machine. His immortality proves hollow, and over a millennium, he engineers his return to flesh – but must keep his mechanical mind. When is a man a man? And when is a man not a man at all? This isn't meant to be a complete story, but rather a glimpse – an elevator pitch that poses these essential questions. And above all, it needed a heart. It needed to land with emotional impact. I was the created one, the fragile man. I was the transformation, the time walker. I was the discontented one, the heir of misery. I was flesh made whole, the welcomer of death. Dark. Right? Needless to say, I didn’t go back to sleep that morning. My mind was on fire. 👇

SCORE My first step was finding a scratch score – it's crucial for editing narrative pieces. Even if it's eventually replaced, having a time signature to cut to is essential. I edit to both the beat and the voiceover timing, though the latter flows independently. Searching for "Cinematic" yielded three promising candidates. Steven Beddall's "The Warrior's Blade" immediately stood out – perfect for balancing quiet reflection with epic moments. This track became more than background music; it shaped the entire visual approach and became the project's heartbeat. 👇

VOICEOVER My process: write, listen, revise, listen, test, edit. I initially used premium text-to-speech to test the narrative flow. AI voice "Professor" delivered the authoritative presence I needed for my narrator, Dr. Thorne. Initially, full-script readings fell flat – but individual lines worked beautifully at 0.8x speed with "Sad" emotion as the baseline, occasionally switching to other emotions for variety. Final workflow: recording each line individually, then placing them in Premiere, syncing with the score's emotional beats. Simple prompts like "I...was the created one...The fragile man..." produced exactly what I needed. I used iZotope Nectar applied to my main vo track plus a track dropped one octave and another two octaves to give the performance that massive god-like sound. 👇

BLOCKING After locking the 90-second musical score, I developed my shot list by placing gray placeholder frames on the timeline and cutting transitions to the beat. The project required roughly 40 shots. Watching these gray frames change to music is magical – the shots materialize in your mind. Some moments demand a longer hold, others just 15 frames. This basic edit becomes the blueprint guiding everything that follows. 👇

MIDJOURNEY First priority: establishing Dr. Ethan Thorne's character arc - from human, to robot, to warmongering beast, and finally to an aged man after his 5000-year reconstruction. Each transformation needed specific time periods and settings, which became anchor points for additional scenes. Despite Midjourney's -cref feature, perfect character consistency remained elusive. The robot's distinctive materials helped track his evolution, but the looks varied. Yet the story's strength and editing flow helped viewers' minds bridge these gaps. This became a real-time creative journey. Like jazz improvisation, I riffed off established elements - sometimes nailing shots in one prompt, other times spending hours pursuing a specific vision. 👇

DENOISING + PRE GRADING Most shots benefited from additional processing using Topaz Labs PhotoAI for denoising and MagnificAI for enhancing specific details. Capture One's "Match Look" feature proved essential for maintaining color consistency across three distinct palettes: cool teal for robotic elements, desaturated tones for reality, and harsh gold-red for war scenes. 👇

KLINGAI After testing various platforms, KlingAI became my go-to engine. Its dynamic camera movement and effects handling proved exceptional. The cleanest v1.5 renders went straight to the timeline, while simpler prompts often yielded more dynamic results. 👇

TOPAZ VideoAI While PhotoAI handles my still frame enhancements, VideoAI proved essential for the motion elements. This powerhouse transforms 720p clips into production-ready footage and generates pristine 4x or 8x slow motion from standard clips. The software's ability to upscale, denoise, and maintain sharpness, particularly with AI-generated content, made it an indispensable part of my workflow. It's the bridge between raw AI output and professional-grade production value. 👇

CHEATING Some shots proved too complex for prompting alone. After multiple attempts, I adapted by generating a camera push toward the sky, then compositing my robot character and adding afterburners in Photoshop. While bypassing pure AI generation initially frustrated me, getting the shots "in the can" was what mattered. 👇

PREMIERE While Davinci Resolve is my usual go-to, I chose Premiere for this project. Its rate stretch tool handled speed adjustments beautifully, and Red Giant's Universe Camera Shake plugin added vital energy through simulated handheld and earthquake movements. 👇

MASTER The final stage is always thrilling - checking color consistency, perfecting edit points, and balancing the mix. Audio mastering takes the lion's share of time, carefully crafting a track that peaks at -1db while preserving every crucial detail. When you hear that final rumble in the mix, you know it's ready. 👇

THANKS Thank you for watching "The Last Immortal | The Saga of Dr. Ethan Thorne!" This project began as an experiment to validate AI tools for pre-visualization and pitch materials. It evolved into something far more significant – proof that end-to-end production of epic-scale narratives is now within reach of independent creators. Creating this piece in my basement studio during nights and weekends has been both humbling and extraordinary. The fact that one person can realize complex narratives like Dr. Thorne's story in just four weeks – concepts that once required entire VFX teams and months of production – still amazes me. The rapid evolution of AI filmmaking tools hints at even more compelling storytelling possibilities ahead. We're entering an age where we're limited only by our imaginations, not our resources. Your interest and engagement make this exploration meaningful and fun. It’s great to be a part of this new frontier. 👇

SHOUTOUTS A big thanks to IG: @chrisperna,@PJaccetturo, @revelinai, @LudovicCreator, @AIandDesign, and @doganuraldesign for your support in this endeavor. Also, many thanks to IG: @boriseldagsen and @AECutting for their wonderful workshops. I learned so much from each of you! Happy Halloween!
