C Cole Messina (@GamecockBasebll) is going to be a fun follow this spring. After playing sparingly as a true Freshman in 2022, Messina had a strong summer in the Northwoods League and hit .294/.410/.483 with 10 2B, 5 HR, and 40 RBIs. Proceeded to have a stellar Sophomore campaign, hitting .307/.428/.615 with 18 2B, 17 HR, and 65 RBIs in 62 games. Was a First Team All-SEC selection and a Third Team All-American. Thick, ultra-physical build at 6' and 230-lbs. Stands nearly upright in the box with a slightly open front side. Somewhat high handset, starts with the head of his bat pointed almost straight down behind his back shoulder. Small stride, gets his swing going with a bit of a barrel tip and without much of a load. Bat speed is plus. Messina has a pull-oriented approach and an above average feel for the barrel. Bat-to-ball skills are advanced, and in '23 he sported an overall IZ contact rate of 90% (90% against FB, 92% against SL). Sound pitch recognition skills and doesn't really expand the zone. Would put a 55 on the hit tool. His natural strength and physicality allows him to generate high-quality impact on a regular basis. Max EV in '23 was 108. Overall raw power is a 55, but a 60 to the pull side. There are some defensive question marks, but Messina is a sneaky athlete behind the dish. Moves well laterally. However, his overall catching skillset will need to become more polished. OF Trevor Condon (Tennessee Baseball) was one of my favorite position players I saw in Jupiter. Collected 7 hits (1 XBH) and 4 RBIs across 5 games. Slightly undersized, but there's some impact (mainly to the pull side) packed into his frame. Wiry, athletic build at 5'11" and 175-lbs. Prototypical top-of-the-order table setter. Explosive and twitchy operation in the box with no-doubt plus bat speed. Feel for the barrel is there, high-level bat-to-ball skills. Controlled the zone well with polished swing decisions in my looks last week. Does tend to hit the ball on the ground, would like to see more line drives. Hit-over-power profile with some PS thump. Gets out of the box unbelievably quick, turned in 70-grade run times. Condon's tantalizing combination of speed and athleticism translates well to centerfield. He can really go and get it and has plenty of range, but if he can shore up his routes (take a more efficient, crisp path to the baseball) he has a chance to become an impact defender. The intangibles with Condon are a nice cherry on top. Advanced baseball sense; stole 2nd on a great dirt ball read, swiped 3rd on a well-executed shuffle lead. Incredibly high motor, plays with his hair on fire. Does not take a pitch off! Always involved, brings the juice! Like the Energizer bunny. Kind of a throwback player in that sense - it's clear he LOVES to play! Think along the lines of Sal Frelick/Slater de Brun (SDB better defender at this point with more of a physical, barrel-chested look). Top 2-3 round type for me this July.

TRANSFER: Duke OF AJ Gracia has jumped into the portal. A few hours late on this, but some context I think is necessary... Gracia has the ability to win the Golden Spikes in 2026. He's my No. 4 ranked colleg prospect in the 2026 Draft. But a few changes must be made. Put simply, he's got to be willing to ambush the baseball. He's consistently run extremely low swing rates and that passivity gets him into too many pitchers' counts. His bat-to-ball skills are bordering on elite regardless of zone or pitch type. He rarely gives away an at-bat. But if Gracia is to transform into that 25-homer/.370 hitter I think a lot of people think he can be, he needs to control the plate appearance. More 'A-Swings' in ambush counts. Drive the boat, don't get towed. Enormous fan of this kid's raw tools. Terrific frame and a gorgeous swing. Whoever lands him could be getting a true difference maker who can take over a series by himself.

OF Jaden Gustafson (Wichita State Baseball) is an under the radar name to keep tabs on this spring. Hit .296/.367/.403 last spring with 15 XBH and followed with an outstanding summer in the Jayhawk League in which he posted a .391/.439/.626 slash line with 11 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 32 RBIs and 12 BB to just 2 Ks across 115 at-bats. Athletic frame at 6'3" and 215-lbs with particular strength in his lower-half. Stands upright in the box with a high handset and slightly open front side. Will drop/drift his hands a bit in his load, but Gustafson has plenty of hand speed. Small-strider. Compact operation in which he takes a relatively direct path to contact. Has shown the ability to adjust. Gustafson has double-plus bat-to-ball skills, and last season he posted an 87% overall contact rate and a 93% overall IZ contact rate (94% against FB). He also possesses advanced pitch recognition skills and swing decisions, and last year his overall chase rate was 24%. Very few swings outside of the shadow zone. Gustafson uses the entire field, but has a particular knack for going the opposite way. Barrel skills are also advanced. The most intriguing part about Gustafson in my eyes is his potential power upside. That might sound a little strange considering he has 0 collegiate HRs, but he's a strong kid with some present impact (90th EV of 103, Max of 104.3) and whose AirPull% last spring was a minuscule 7.7%. The bat and hand speed is there, and I'll be curious to see what will happen if he can get the ball up in the air more. Even if he can just start pulling the ball more. Gustafson is a great athlete who profiles best in a corner OF spot. Can go and get it, and he's got North-to-South range as well gap-to-gap range. Arm is fringy, but the athleticism certainly plays. 3B Kevin Bazzell (Texas Tech Baseball) is sneaky one of the best pure hitters in this year's Draft class. In his first full collegiate season, he slashed .348/.453/.572 with 24 2B, 10 HR, 62 RBI, and more BB (45) than K (32). Tied the program record for most doubles in a season and was named First Team All-Big 12. Extremely simple setup in the box with a minimal stride and slight barrel tip. No wasted movement, takes a direct path to the baseball. Does an excellent job of consistently staying inside the ball. Level swing, barrel is in the hitting zone for a while. Hit over power profile, but the hit tool is a strong 60 with above average power to the pull side. Has an advanced approach along with plus bat-to-ball skills and plus feel for the barrel. Last season he worked a 92% overall IZ contact rate, including an absurd 96% IZ contact rate against FB. Converted catcher, can pick it over at 3B and continues to get better with time. Has a plus arm and has shown comfortability attacking the baseball. Hard worker who keeps his head down and is a darn good player. Potential top-2 round pick this July.

Drew Faurot (FSU Baseball) was one of the more underrated players in the CCBL this summer. The Seminole will likely start up the middle next spring after slashing .263/.342/.414 in 28 games with a wood bat in Brewster. The switch-hitting middle infielder has a similar stance as a LHH and RHH and shows a high leg kick upon load. It's a violent hack through the zone with exceptional bat speed and was able to show decent pull-side pop from both sides with 6 2B & 3 HR this summer. Faurot was third among qualified SS in hits (26), OPS (.756) and second in HR (3) and SLG% (.414). He looked smooth defensively and showed the ability to play SS or 2B after splitting time at both spots on the Cape. Solid range with average speed and a fringe arm at SS/2B but can get the ball out of his glove quickly. He should stick at either position at the pro level. Pitch recognition could improve as he struggled at times with the slider and change, resulting in a 55% miss and 42% miss rate, respectively. He had a 30.3 K% on the Cape but has a career a 40.9 FB% in college. Would also like to see some more line drives via hard hit balls after having a below average 42.6 GB% while at school. His second Cape stint showed that improvement is coming. Faurot's hard work ethic stands out. He's always watching film, taking hacks, fielding grounders - looking to improve in all aspects of his game. He's going to be an early Day 2 draft prospect in '25 with projectable power and versatility both offensively and defensively.

Average bat speed. Hit over power profile right now, but Shojinaga has an advanced feel for the barrel and plus bat-to-ball skills. Last season, he sported a 93% overall IZ contact rate. Approach is sound, but sometimes chases down/away. Does a nice job of using the whole field and working inside the baseball. Would put a 55 on the pure hit tool. Sound defender at 2B with above average arm strength and makes the plays he needs to make. He has quick hands and some range in either direction. Shojinaga also has experience catching, and got some reps behind the plate this summer for Team USA. Will be interesting to see what it would look like if he focused on catching - actions need refining, but the arm strength is there. Shojinaga will need to really hit, and he's capable of doing so. This July, he profiles as a 5th-8th round pick.
