Xīzàng 西藏 is just Chinese for the Tibet province. it comes from the Tibetan Ü-Tsang དབུས་གཙང་། (pronounced dbus gtsang), 乌思藏 Wūsīzàng in pinyin. The final character 藏 zàng means Tibet, so Xīzàng just means "Western Tibet". In fact "Tibet" is the colonial British name.

The name Tibet is the same as Mount Everest. It's not what Xizang people called it. Zang is much closer to what is called in their own ethnic language.
