He worked as a postal clerk and beer salesman and was largely self-educated. In 1958, he founded the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC), advocating unity and independence for Congo. He was arrested in 1959 after riots but later released. Congo gained independence from Belgium on 30 June 1960 and Lumumba became Prime Minister while Joseph Kasa-Vubu became President. On independence day, Lumumba condemned colonial exploitation, straining relations with Belgium and Western countries. Shortly after, the Congo faced an army mutiny and the secession of Katanga under Moïse Tshombe. The United Nations deployed peacekeepers but refused to intervene militarily. During the Cold War, Lumumba sought Soviet assistance, alarming the United States and Belgium. On 5 September 1960, Kasa-Vubu dismissed Lumumba and both leaders attempted to dismiss each other. Colonel Joseph Mobutu launched a coup on 14 September, suspending parliament and placing Lumumba under house arrest. The gruesome murder was the culmination of multiple plots by the American, British and Belgian governments, which relied on paid Congolese accomplices and a Belgian execution squad to carry out the hit. Declassified CIA documents revealed the American government’s desire to assassinate Lumumba even before the country’s independence, and the director of the CIA had called him "worse than Castro." The straight-talking pan-Africanist stated numerous times that his interests were those of the Congolese people and described himself as a nationalist. He wanted full independence and full control over natural resources to improve the lives of the Congolese people - and that irked imperialists. While discussing the Congo crisis with Lord Home, Britain’s foreign secretary, US President Dwight Eisenhower said he wished “Lumumba would fall into a river full of crocodiles.” After failed attempts to use a Georgian hitman and a poison expert to spike Lumumba’s toothpaste, the CIA pulled strings behind the scenes, exploiting the country’s political situation following independence to paint Lumumba as a ‘Commie.’ Lumumba and two of his associates were executed by firing squad. While discussing the Congo crisis with Lord Home, Britain’s foreign secretary, US President Dwight Eisenhower said he wished “Lumumba would fall into a river full of crocodiles.” After failed attempts to use a Georgian hitman and a poison expert to spike Lumumba’s toothpaste, the CIA pulled strings behind the scenes, exploiting the country’s political situation following independence to paint Lumumba as a ‘Commie.’ Lumumba and two of his associates were executed by firing squad. Their bodies were hacked to pieces and dissolved in sulphuric acid. Our video recalls the chilling details surrounding the assassination, one of the most significant in the 20th century.

With devoted care, Ralphie made a remarkable recovery: from a sad, motionless puppy into an active little boy, running, playing, and happily interacting with his foster siblings. The arrest of Patrice Lumumba, 1960. Patrice Lumumba🇨🇩 was the first legally elected prime minister of D.R Congo. He was assassinated in 1961 following a military coup supported by U.S.A & Belgian imperialism which was admitted by the State Dept in 2013 authorized by president Eisenhower. For over a 100 years, the US and Belgium have played key roles in shaping Congo's destiny. In April 1884, seven months before the Berlin Congress, the US became the first country in the world to recognise the claims of King Leopold II of the Belgians to the territories of the Congo. In the few months prior to his assassination, Lumumba had been the first elected prime minister of the Republic of the Congo, newly founded on June 30, 1960. A revolutionary nationalist, he was a major leader in the country’s fight for independence from Belgian colonialism. He intended to use the country’s vast resources to improve the lives of the Congolese people. They had endured unspeakable suffering under Belgian rule, with literally millions having died on its plantations and in its mines. His rise to power alarmed Belgium. While having been forced to grant the Congolese people formal independence, it had no intention of giving them real independence or surrendering its economic interests in the mineral-rich land—rubber, ivory, and copper, diamonds, gold & more. Nor did U.S. imperialism. By 1960s, it too was exploiting the Congo’s resources & was determined to expand its economic, political & military influence in Africa. It wanted to establish a compliant, bought-off government that wouldn’t stand in its way & they saw him as a threat. The U.S. with Belgian assistance, began plotting to remove Lumumba from office and silence him...for good. To accomplish this, they took advantage of the fact that the country was not yet really in the hands of, as Lumumba had put it, “its own children.” Behind the façade of formal independence, Belgian military officers still controlled the Congo’s army and police. The mineral corporations still had tight control over the wealth of the country and over an apparatus of corrupt politicians. Secret agents of the U.S. CIA, Belgian intelligence, and other powers were working day and night to keep power firmly and permanently in the hands of forces subservient to imperialism. Among those eager to collaborate with imperialism was Joseph Mobutu. He had been a colonel in the Belgian colonial army, and was made head of the “new” imperialist-controlled army. And Mobutu was working hand-in-hand with the CIA on how to kill Patrice Lumumba. To carry out the CIA’s assassination directive, Mobutu staged an army coup d’etat, suppressing political organizations in the capital. On January 17, 1961, a firing squad shot to death the Congolese anti-colonialist fighter and leader Patrice Lumumba. His body was buried, but then dug up and dismembered and burned and dissolved in acid so there would not even be a corpse around which his supporters could rally. He eloquently rebutted the patronising speech delivered by then Belgian King, Baudouin, who arrogantly claimed that the Congolese should be grateful to his grandfather, King Leopold II, for bringing civilisation to the Great Lakes nation. Leopold II is the man who killed between 10 and 5 million Congolese, maimed more, and turned the region's populations into his personal slaves. Lumumba explained the horrors of Belgium’s colonial rule, where children’s limbs were chopped off if their parents didn’t meet their daily rubber quotas. He explained that Belgium never gave Congo its independence, but rather it was won by the brave Congolese who gave their blood, sweat and tears. The speech ultimately cost Lumumba his life. The Belgian King took personal offense. He later conspired with the CIA, M16 and local collaborators to assassinate Lumumba less than a year later.
