Kubrick originally was going to write dialogue for Ermey’s character himself, but he became so impressed with what Ermey improvised, he decided it was not necessary. He simply let him ad-lib, an act practically unheard of for a Stanley Kubrick film. The biggest misconception about Elon Musk is that he’s difficult to work for. It couldn’t be further from the truth. If that were real, the hardest-working, smartest, most talented people on earth wouldn’t stay with him for years. But they do. They stay bc he’s NOT difficult to work for, he’s mission driven, he fights next to the people in the front lines, and he’s inspiring to work for.

According to Kirk Douglas, during the filming of "Paths of Glory" (1957), Stanley Kubrick made the veteran actor Adolphe Menjou do the same scene 17 times. After a few takes, Menjou said to Kubrick, "That was my best reading. I think we can break for lunch now." It was well past the usual lunch time but Kubrick said he wanted another take. Menjou went into an absolute fury. In front of Kirk Douglas & the entire crew he blasted off on what he claimed was Kubrick's dubious parentage, and made several other unprintable references to Kubrick's relative greenness in the art of directing actors. Stanley Kubrick merely listened calmly, and, after Menjou had spluttered to an uncomplimentary conclusion, said quietly: "All right, let's try the scene once more." With utter docility, Menjou went back to work. Douglas said, "Stanley instinctively knew what to do." Douglas felt that Kubrick's air of Knowledge can infuriate an actor at first, but then, "You settle down and admire him." Roman Polanski on the one piece of advice that cut through the noise after Sharon Tate's murder: In the months after his wife was killed, Polanski was in the middle of preparing a film called The Day of the Dolphin. Everyone around him (producers, friends, colleagues) was pushing him toward the same prescription. "Right after that, everybody was saying, go back to work," he recalls. "And everybody was saying, work, work. That's the best medicine." Then Stanley Kubrick called. Polanski remembers the conversation clearly: "I'm sure everybody tells you, go to work. Compared it to any job in life, whether it's being producer, basketball player, or a construction worker. "I was just being wise about it. With any craft, if it's being a producer, a rapper, or a basketball player, tennis player, they always talk about the work and the consistency. They go from all the greats in any genre or any aspect of a craftsmanship, it's always about work. Like I said, listening to music, studying different craftsmanships, from basketball and just overall anything. Somebody being a construction worker, building houses, it's always about the extra work and the extra hours you put in. That's what I took into my craft and wanted to be the best, one of the best to play, and that's what it is."
