Minter’s accused killer is an illegal immigrant who has a lengthy violent criminal history and has been released more than 30 times in Fairfax County. Miyares blasted the sanctuary policies of Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, Fairfax County Chair Jeff McKay and the board of supervisors, and Sheriff Stacey Kincaid.

From my reporting in 2023: Now, the top two elected law enforcement officers in Fairfax County are clashing over crime. Descano argues Fairfax County is the safest jurisdiction over a million people. “Unfortunately, it’s not like that right now. It hasn’t been for the last three years,” said Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid, who points to data that shows several categories of major crimes are up in Fairfax County. “We all need to do a better job,” Kincaid told me. “Right now, what we're seeing is not what we call a better job. I have got 1.2 million constituents and when we have a victim town hall meeting and we all come together, it's shameful the way things have not been prosecuted, discoveries not been turned over in the appropriate time frame, and this is not what Fairfax County is supposed to be."

Fairfax County Police have released footage of an officer running over a pedestrian, who was lying in the roadway after having been struck by a separate driver during a hit-and-run. On September 23rd at 8:39pm, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Richmond Highway & Belford Drive in Hybla Valley, Virginia for a hit-and-crash involving a pedestrian. A black Mercedes was seen striking a pedestrian and fleeing the scene. While arriving to the scene, a Fairfax County police officer struck the pedestrian, who was still in the roadway. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded and immediately began performing life-saving measures. Trina Jones, 62, of Alexandria was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. The officer has been identified as Officer Jalin Phillips, a 2-year veteran of the department. He is on restricted-duty status while the investigation continues.
