Thanks, Howie! I use this problem every year with my preservice teachers. We’ve hypothesized that 1000 was not possible but our reasoning never led to a formal proof. Thanks for sharing your proof!

These "Close to 100" and "Close to 1,000" games were a big part of Investigations Math. I do these activities for 'fun' at the end of a math period.
