🚨 INCREDIBLE footage from southern Utah. This is a flash flood roaring out of Hog Canyon and into Kanab Creek, about 6 miles north of Kanab along Highway 89. The power and speed of these floods is unbelievable. Water can go from a dry wash to a raging torrent in just minutes. Huge thanks to Nick Smith for capturing and sharing this video. He documents flash floods across the region, and this is a perfect reminder of why you should never drive or walk into floodwaters. Flash floods remain Utah’s deadliest weather hazard. We witnessed the raw power of nature yesterday just south of Seward Alaska! It was incredible to watch this massive glacier calving, sending a huge wave through the water. Absolutely breathtaking to see firsthand. Glacial calving is a natural process where large chunks of ice break off from the edge of a glacier. This typically happens at the “terminus” or snout, where the glacier meets the sea, a lake, or even dry land. When these massive pieces of ice fall into the water, they become icebergs, or in smaller pieces, “growlers” or “bergy bits.” The process is primarily driven by gravity and the movement of the glacier itself. As a glacier flows—acting like a slow-moving river of ice—it experiences immense internal stress. When it reaches a point where it is no longer supported by land or where it extends out over the water, the ice becomes unstable. Cracks called crevasses form in the ice, and when these cracks penetrate deep enough, a section of the ice can no longer hold its own weight and snaps off, crashing down with incredible force. Calving is a dynamic and loud phenomenon that often triggers significant waves. It is a normal part of a glacier’s life cycle, and very common in the warmer summer months.

The storm even caused a ‘Seafoam storm’ where strong winds blew foam onto people standing on the shore. The storm was thanks to an ‘Atmospheric River’ which is “relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics.” (NOAA) The average Atmospheric River carries the equivalent amount of water as the average flow at the mouth of the Mississippi River.
