A guy mean-mugged me, I mean-mugged him back, we exchanged words… then he “pulled a weapon.” All part of the lesson. A smile, a greeting, or simply walking away can stop a bad situation from becoming permanent.

this man is teaching young boys how to be men. I wish I appreciated men like King Randall when I was a smart ass teenager.

One way you can frame these kinds of encounters is to turn the frame upside down. Instead of thinking, I am going to show him by fighting him that I can’t be pushed around, realize this truth: HE IS THE ONE who wants a fight. Why should I give him what HE wants? I’m not a fool.

Better to back away. Never turn your back. But I applaud you teaching young men to deescalate these situations.

So applicable to many areas of adult interaction, especially in driving/road rage. Thank you.

We should be kind, happy, and loving.... and at the same time fully capable of violence. But you don't go flexing your violent abilities. That should be reserved for when it's necessary. I agree. 100%. Smile and greet people. Don't reveal your violent capabilities.

You know you need to write a book/parenting manual. Or even a course. It would help SO many.

Excellent. Entering into a fight because you have been “disrespected” places you at great risk. Fights are completely unpredictable and a recipe for disaster…

Love the work this guy is doing. He needs to keep this up. I look forward to seeing some of those kids teaching kids like this when their adults.

Pride heals faster than bullet wounds. A Mothers Heart never heals over a dead child. Scientific Facts! Good Job teaching more than “Science.”

1st acknowledge the fact some people on the street just have rabies and there's nothing you can do or say to avoid trouble. But in most encounters "pro-active deescalation" being calm, respectful, affirming their humanity, and be willing to back away will diffuse most situations.

I think so highly of what you’re doing. Parents can’t teach what they don’t know, someone has to start the ball rolling!

Great work. My father used to tell me: "Better to be a coward for a moment than dead for a lifetime." He showed me how to fight when necessary but always adviced: "better to come home alive with a hurted pride than be a proud dead." So did I taught my son.

It is also worth noting that these kids not smiling is affecting how they feel on the inside!

Acknowledge everyone you meet as a fellow human person in your like even if it’s on the bus or train just for a moment. I do a quick head lift with a quick half smile and maybe a quick lift of a hand. A sorta silent “hey there”. Sometimes quick “good morning/afternoon/evening”. With women it’s a little different because I know they are rightfully a little more guarded. Respecting that I often just nod my head. We ALWAYS say “thank you” to the driver when getting off the bus. Here’s a great song to go with this conversation! BTW: Make sure the kids know not to smoke. It cost Nat King Cole his life, 3 packs a day cut him short at only 45 y.o. [I’m in California where somehow there are people who still can afford to smoke. Better to save your money for a down payment on a house!

I’m in Texas. Let me be real when I tell you that black folks need to up their mean-mug game. These Indians have culturally appropriated that and taken it to a whole different level!!!
