A guy named Philip turned every old iPhone and iPad into a working second monitor for free. It is called OpenDisplay. It gives your Mac a real extended display using an Apple device you already own. You can use it for: > Messages > Spotify > Documentation > Video... show more

But MacOS natively supports display extension to an iPad. What this does different?

Now I can turn my old iPad into a second screen for my Macbook. This is great.

Go for it

Works with Android too:

Isn’t it the same as sidecar?

Latencies over Wi-Fi get painful past 30Hz.

This one is super good

Dropped frames on my Quest 2 past 35fps until I wired the AP directly to my desk.

Setting up my old iPad as a terminal screen right now.

コレをWindowsでも出来るようにしてほしい

Mac already does this natively!

Turning old Apple gear into free second monitors via OpenDisplay. Genius utility hack.

Built in in apple not a phillip invention

This is great. Will try it out.

Thank you for naming the guy.. Most people write viral posts by saying this dude, or this guy.. they never attribute the creator.

Anyone actually tried this?

Me

iPad Air 2 not supported. Such a disappointment. While the App Store says it’s compatible, it won’t allow the app to install as it needs iPadOS 16.4 at least. iPad Air 2 was excluded from iPad OS 16.

Now we need someone to make it work in Linux and Windows.

I built an app to control the Mac with two mouses. Because why not.

Am I missing something here? This is a basic iOS function for iPads. iPhones would be a nice addition.

Monitors are so cheap now, who would use a tiny iPad or iPhone?????

There’s been apps for that for years.

@otisframpton Using WiFi only or just need in the same network?

@Wealth_Pill Wonder it this’ll work on an iMac, meaning the iMac becomes the extra monitor for my MacBook Pro

Yo hey that's me 👋:)

Is there anything similar for Windows?

isn't that what Handoff is?

The best part is no account. A local tool like this should feel like plugging in a cable.

How is this different from Sidecar or Screen Sharing for the Mac?

Can you pls do it for any other cross platforms devices too
