A guy who is good at comp shooting but bad at tactical things will do better in a sudden bad situation than the tactical gun fighting nerd with a slow draw, slow splits and bad aim. There is a clear hierarchy here.

Yeah some squad of marines who know proper battle drill and patrol tactics and all that shit will probably do better in some military/shtf situation than your average comp shooter. You're not in that situation, you live in suburban Ohio and are going to the grocery store. The threat profile is way different. And you can learn the former much easier than the later. Why there is tens of thousands of corn fed potato IQ infantry and a small number of Grand Master shooters.

I am a sample size of one, but there was a very competent sport shooter who was murdered in his own jewellery store a while back. He stood in the doorway and engaged two of the robbers, but did not see their associate off to the side who walked up to him and shot him in the head at point-blank range. I unfortunately saw the CCTV footage. On the other hand we have daily examples of people who do not do any sport shooting what so ever (our cops) win firefights, including ones where they are outnumbered. This does not mean that sport shooting is not valuable. This does not mean that people who do not do sport shooting would have done better in the first scenario. What I do think it means, is that it is very difficult to conclude that one aspect of shooting proficiency is going to put you in a better position than another when the chips are down. As someone more experienced than me said: “Sport shooting is sport shooting. Training is training. Don’t confuse the two. They are not the same.” And I think he was probably on to something.

When you watch Keanu Reeves train for John Wick on shooting stages, you can reframe and watch the gunfight choreography as just long USPSA matches. Kind of dulls the movies but it’s really simple to see

This is also the only non-cop self defense shooting I've ever seen where the guy uses his WML and it actually makes an apparent impact on the outcome of the shooting. Definitely looks like it helped him see the guy to make that last shot.

In the words of the late great Paul Harrel, “defensive shootings are just shot matches with a par time”. Not the whole formula of course but you can get 90% of the way there with it.

Tom never said what type of competition the cop participated in. Everyone is assuming it's an action pistol sport. While many pistol sports started to test fighting skills (Combat League --> IPSC, or even PPC) what if the guy wins at Bullseye or Silhouette?

Everyone knows “slow is smoove and smoove is fast”. I ain’t buying this jive competition shooting stuff. Everyone knows it will get you kilt!

What a breakdown. You nailed this.

My most serious incident was my fatass wrestling a 90lbs schizoid for my sidearm. I won, but I almost had to pop the little bastard in the chest.

Yeah but I’ll just see red and rise to the occasion
