The blatant injustice meted out to the Avila Convent School Band from Coimbatore in the South Zone School Band Competition at Hyderabad is highly condemnable. A team that was officially declared FIRST in the Brass Band (Girls) category, given certificates and trophy, has now been arbitrarily pushed to third place through a alleged backdoor “re‑result”, without any transparency or notice to the school or students. This blatant manipulation of results raises serious questions about the conduct of the organisers and the role of the Telangana Government, under whose watch the original results were cancelled and a new list issued after “expert review” that mysteriously downgraded Avila Convent, Tamil Nadu. Such conduct is an insult to the hard work, discipline and merit of our daughters who won fair and square on the field. The Government of TN cannot remain a mute spectator when our team, which legitimately earned the right to represent the State, is being denied its place in the National School Band Competition to be held on 24th January in Delhi. It is the duty of the TN Govt to immediately intervene with the Telangana Govt & other authorities to restore Avila Convent’s rightful position. The Telangana Govt must ensure complete transparency, publish the basis of this so‑called re‑evaluation, and guarantee that the original winners are not sacrificed to backroom lobbying, if any. The young girls of Avila Convent have made Tamil Nadu proud; now it is the Govt of Tamil Nadu's responsibility to stand by them and ensure they march in Delhi with their heads held high.

Tuesday was a black day for India. Friday has seen redemption in measures I could not have imagined. For the first time in more than 30 years, a bill introduced by the government has failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. I am glad that it is this bill, which was conceived with malicious intent and without any logic, that has been defeated. Parties that would ordinarily have been convinced of short-term benefits from an increase in seats have upheld oppositon unity to control the dictatorial tendencies of the government. It is a sign that a politics of principles still exists in India, that there is still hope for a brighter future. This is the turning point we have been waiting for. When he launched the election campaign, Chief Minister Thiru M.K.Stalin said “Tamil Nadu shall fight, Tamil Nadu shall win.” Today, I am grateful to say: Tamil Nadu has fought, Tamil Nadu has won. India has fought, India has won. PS: I am glad to be back in a white shirt, as the April heat in Madurai is not conducive to black shirts

This teacher says if you ever wonder why people are leaving the teaching profession in droves, this is one of the main reasons. She has students that she has written an incident report on every single day. She has contacted the principal and the support staff and the help that was given to her was to email the parents of the students. Basically, no help or support at all. We have many epidemics in our country but this is one of the biggest that doesn’t get enough attention. We all know our school system is a failure but even more than we know. Students these days have zero consequences. They are passed with straight F’s. They are allowed to be a continuing distraction and disruption in the classrooms and nothing is done about it. We need to start over. 💯 Why do we allow this this as a school? As a district? As a city? As a state? As a country? It didn’t use to be like this? This is why other countries surpass us in education, there is no discipline in our schools. Would you want to be a teacher in this day and age at a public school?

On April 22, 2026, my cousin was attacked by a group of students from Marcus Garvey Technical High School (Top Campus) on her way home from school. She was not involved in the original conflict, but she was targeted anyway. Multiple students surrounded her, hit her, and even used objects to strike her. The bus driver did not intervene. This is especially concerning given that Andrew Holness implemented this bus system to provide students with a safer way to commute to and from school, yet they are still not safe from each other. She came home in pain with a swollen face, a bruised lip, and her uniform torn off of her. The full video is not being shared to protect her identity, but in the clip, one of the attackers can be heard saying, “it nuh done yet” (“it’s not over yet”), further threatening her. Today, she is going to the hospital and a formal report is being made. This is not “school drama”. This is a group assault. This is battery. Students should not have to fear for their safety just trying to get home. There must be accountability for the students involved and for the lack of supervision. We are asking for a full investigation into this incident! Bullying and violence in schools is getting out of control. How many more children will be killed before something is done? Hyderabad, Telangana | Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the Charminar Zone (South Zone), Khare Kiran Prabhakar says, "Yesterday, in Success School, an incident came to our notice. In this school, one lady teacher wrote that everyone has to read Kalma as the homework. Out of 25 students, all were the Muslim students only but one Hindu student was there. It was a complete violation of the education policy as well as the school policy. The parents of the Hindu students came in evening to the police station as well as to a school. The school management has taken action and the MD of the Success school has given a statement and the teacher has been terminated... Parents are satisfied that action has been takein in this case. Police is monitoring the situation. No one should spread any kind of Hindu-Muslim hatedness or any kind of communalism. Please do not entertain any kind of rumors. The school management and parents are on the same side... For the protest here, over 30 people are taken in the preventive custody and the situation is peaceful. Parents have given a statement to the police as well that they do not have any complaint from the management. So we have not registered any kind of complaint regarding this issue. If any kind of further complaints comes to us, we'll take the legal opinion based on that..."

In this school, one lady teacher wrote that everyone has to read Kalma as the homework. Out of 25 students, all were the Muslim students only but one Hindu student was there. It was a complete violation of the education policy as well as the school policy. The parents of the Hindu students came in evening to the police station as well as to a school. The school management has taken action and the MD of the Success school has given a statement and the teacher has been terminated... Parents are satisfied that action has been takein in this case. Police is monitoring the situation. No one should spread any kind of Hindu-Muslim hatedness or any kind of communalism. Please do not entertain any kind of rumors. The school management and parents are on the same side... For the protest here, over 30 people are taken in the preventive custody and the situation is peaceful. Parents have given a statement to the police as well that they do not have any complaint from the management. So we have not registered any kind of complaint regarding this issue. If any kind of further complaints comes to us, we'll take the legal opinion based on that..."

This is not just about one school, it is part of a disturbing pattern of unrest, arson and violent protests in institutions that should be nurturing our children, not endangering them. When police and firefighters are overwhelmed by a blaze inside a school compound, it means we have allowed tensions, breakdowns in discipline and unresolved grievances to reach a dangerous boiling point. As a country, we must stop treating these incidents as isolated drama and start confronting them as a systemic crisis. We need honest conversations about student welfare, mental health, school governance and the pressures our young people are facing, alongside firm but fair discipline and clear consequences for violence and destruction. I call on the Ministry of Education, Kenya (MoE), school boards, parents and student leaders to treat the wave of school riots as an urgent national concern. Secure every learner, investigate each incident thoroughly and implement concrete safeguards and dialogue mechanisms so that schools remain places of safety, learning and hope, not recurring scenes of fire, fear and chaos.
