Family members accompanied by officials have arrived at the Gugulethu Cemetery in Cape Town, where Namibian political prisoner Simon Niilenge is buried. Niilenge died on Robben Island in 1974. His remains, together with those of fellow political prisoner Festus Nehale, are expected to be exhumed on Thursday and Friday as part of a programme to repatriate them to Namibia from South Africa. The remains will be prepared for transportation to Namibia, where Niilenge and Nehale are expected to be reburied as Namibia commemorates Heroes’ Day. The repatriation programme also includes 84 human remains held at the Iziko Museum of South Africa. The man, who is now in stable condition, suffers from memory loss after sustaining a head injury about four months ago. Motorists in Windhoek were left stunned after a group of Angolan street vendors were seen bathing and washing their clothes in public following a burst water pipe near the circle intersection opposite Hartlief and Meatco. According to Linda Katyoka, one of the individuals at the scene, the group noticed water leaking from the damaged pipe and used the opportunity to bathe and wash their clothes. “We did not know that we were not allowed to bathe there. Where we stay, we do not have water and do not get the opportunity to bathe,” Katyoka explained to the NBC team. The incident attracted attention from members of the public, prompting officers from the City of Windhoek Police to intervene. Today, we visited the Olievenhoutbosch Substation, which has burned down due to cable theft and vandalism. The fire erupted around 2 am on the 24th and lasted for the better half of Christmas Day. We would like to appreciate EMS and TMPD for their swift response and efforts to contain this unfortunate incident. The Electricity Department has started the process to restore power and has established that Transformer A has suffered heavy damage and is irreparable; however, the second transformer (Transformer B), has passed all tests and together with Transformer R, which is the spare, will be ready for supplying enough electricity to the affected areas. The specialised dry-ice cleaning has been conducted on the busbars to safely remove fire residue and contaminants without further damaging sensitive electrical equipment, and as the team remains hard at work to replace other components, such as cabling, critical to the safe restoration of power. We would like to apologise to the community members affected by this criminal activity and the inconvenience caused by the fire on our infrastructure and Law Enforcement agencies have started the investigation to bring the perpetrators to book. We furthermore request our residents to exercise patience as the restoration process is delayed by the pouring of rain, which makes it difficult for the technical teams to function optimally.
