Donations to our Give to the Max Day fundraiser (link below) go directly toward our upcoming winter field season and helping us keep our 350-400 trail cameras functioning all winter long. Interesting footage of a bear visiting a wolf den this spring—a very close call for the pups who were outside the den literally a few minutes before the bear showed up. The bear’s behavior was quite interesting as well. Almost as if it knew it had stumbled into an area it shouldn’t have. Interestingly, we have captured several instance of bears visiting and checking out active wolf dens over the years. However, we have never captured evidence that bears have killed pups, though there was once such report from Wisconsin recently. This footage was only possible because of the generous folks who have donated to our project and supported our trail camera work. We are just 38% away from our annual fundraising goal, and need your help to finish it off. More footage of the first documented cougar family in Minnesota in the past century. Volume up for the full experience. More to come soon! Our goal is to learn as much as we can about these cougars in the coming months. But we could really use some help covering costs associated with this research. For instance, we collected 9 scats at this kill and they are on their way to a lab for genetic analysis to try to get individual genetics and determine what western population the mom and dad originated from. Genetic samples cost ~$55-70 per sample, depending on the type and quality of the sample. Your support helps us cover costs like this, and gives us the ability and resources to study these individuals, and any others out there we might learn of. Plus, the support helps us have the capacity to send in any samples we collect in the coming months.Once we have results, we will share with everyone! The children in Gaza Camp in Deir Al Balah were barefoot, some wearing summer clothes, and all were cold. This camp gets minimal support and none of the families had anything to keep them warm for winter. Our The Sameer Project team got to work after taking the sizes of all the children at the camp, organizating a distribution of warm winter jackets, ensuring there was one for each child in need. We provided 103 jackets, each one heavy, water proof and lined, to keep them warm during the winter storms. Each one was approximately $23 and cost a total 2,290 after 9% commission. We are right in the middle of winter and need your help to distribute more warm clothing and protective jackets. Donate to our “Give Warmth to Gaza” initiative in our Return Home Campaign. The largest pack in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem this past winter: the Blackstone Pack. Nice of them to give the camera a few nibbles on their way by! Awesome footage of a wolf pack erupting in a howl on top of a frozen beaver lodge this past winter! You can hear the howls of the adults and the yipping of the pups, which sound kind of like coyotes. Thursday, the 28th November is Thanksgiving day in the U S A. Families will come together and celebrate the harvest and all the blessings of the year. It's also the time of year when people donate to charity and we wonder if any of our friends will remember the work that Ernestos does for the animals in war torn Syria? We have just had one of our worst months for fundraising, with the lowest donations we have seen for a long time. A little gift from our supporters means everything to our animals and to the lives of the 100s of animals we treat and help every day of the year. We want to continue to be there for them. To help as we have helped for the past 9 years. But first, we must make it through the winter months. Will you help us? We need fuel, we need food,we need medicines. But most of all, we need your kindness and your belief in what we do.

More awesome footage of one of the most ethereal forest creatures: the lynx. We captured more daytime footage of lynx this past winter than in any previous winter, in large part, because we had many more cameras out this winter compared to previous years (had ~350 cameras out this winter). And more cameras means, we get more neat observations like these (plus higher-quality data on wolves in the area, which is the main reason we deploy so many cameras). Note: this is the 2nd video of our “best" lynx footage from this winter. See our post on Monday for the 1st video if you haven’t watched that one yet. Both have some pretty neat sequences in our opinion! Huge thanks to the >8,700 individual donors whose generosity has allowed us to deploy a large number of trail cameras and capture neat footage like this to share with everyone.

Palestinians in Gaza have been warning over and over about the winter and the rain. Yet nothing changed, the winter is here and Palestinians yet again are suffering. International pressure and direct action must not stop! We can’t stop rain but at the Sameer Project we can provide tarps that help prevent tents from leaking and blankets for warmth. We are working on securing large amounts for underserved camps but we need your continuous support. On New Year’s Day, we captured this footage of the Blackstone Pack, a large, predominantly Canadian Pack, trespassing deep into the Listening Point Pack territory on the Kabetogama Peninsula. The Blackstone Pack was a large pack at the start of early winter as we had several observations of 9 wolves together. By mid-to-late winter, though, the pack seemed to have dwindled to 5-7 members. However, we do not have great data on the changes to this pack's size because the pack’s territory is predominantly in Canada. We suspect their territory is on the north shore of Namakan Lake, directly to the east of the Kabetogama Peninsula in Voyageurs National Park. The territory likely includes Blackstone Island in Namakan Lake, hence the name “Blackstone Pack”. That said, we think their territory likely includes the northeastern tip of the Kabetogama Peninsula; specifically, the area in and around Kettle Falls, meaning the pack does occupy a small sliver of our study area. The reason we have any data on this pack is because they made periodic excursions into our study area this past fall and winter, and were captured on several cameras. In total, we documented 7 such excursions with some of these excursions lasting several days. And of course, they could have made other excursions not captured on camera. On one excursion, the Blackstone Pack crossed through 3 pack territories—Listening Point, Mithrandir, and Cranberry Bay—before returning to their territory. Of course, all of this highlights why having many trail cameras is extremely helpful for understanding these dynamics. Without a lot of cameras and a lot of footage of the various packs in our area, we would have struggled to piece this all together. I.e., we wouldn’t know who the “resident” wolves in an area are, and who the “intruding” wolves are. But with enough observations from trail cameras, we can tell, based on physical appearances, which wolves belong to which packs, and that helps us make sense of the data we collect.

No tents have entered Gaza since the so called “ceasefire” support: People in Gaza are panicking as winter is coming - which brings the rain, the wind, the cold temperatures. These makeshift tents don’t stand a chance, and there are so many more of them this year after 12 months of more displacements. The Tuyoor Muhajera (Migratory Bird) Camp in Al Mawasi Khan Younis is one of the largest, the poorest, the most at risk camps we have seen. It gets very little aid and support. Families know that come winter they are in trouble. We cannot wait until then, until it is too late to help. They need tents, they need tarps, they need mattresses, and blankets. Tents have come down in price from about $1,200 a few weeks ago to a little more than $400 now. This means that your donations help more families. With the amount we would spent on one family, we can now help three! This should encourage you to continue to give and reach more people in need. No tents have entered Gaza since the so called “ceasefire” support: People in Gaza are panicking as winter is coming - which brings the rain, the wind, the cold temperatures. These makeshift tents don’t stand a chance, and there are so many more of them this year after 12 months of more displacements. The Tuyoor Muhajera (Migratory Bird) Camp in Al Mawasi Khan Younis is one of the largest, the poorest, the most at risk camps we have seen. It gets very little aid and support. Families know that come winter they are in trouble. We cannot wait until then, until it is too late to help. They need tents, they need tarps, they need mattresses, and blankets. Tents have come down in price from about $1,200 a few weeks ago to a little more than $400 now. This means that your donations help more families. With the amount we would spent on one family, we can now help three! This should encourage you to continue to give and reach more people in need. Here we go. The first heavy rains of the winter season in Gaza. In Islam, as in many religions and cultures, rain is something we pray for, it’s a symbol of life - an essential need, leading to bountiful growth, mercy after barrenness, purification, new beginnings, hope. But in Gaza, families have been terrified of this moment, praying that the rain holds off. Makeshift tents and destroyed open structures will not make it through a winter storm. Images are already coming in showing flooded streets, torn tents, children running barefoot through the storm surge of waste and garbage. Now is the time to act. Donate to our Return Home Campaign which we are readying to become our main fundraiser link to support families this winter. Please give to Gaza now. We can source blankets inside of Gaza. They are available, but they are not free aid - they have been allowed in on commercial trucks by the occupation to be sold in markets, however, families cannot afford them. With your help, The Sameer Project can purchase them and distribute them for free to entire camps and areas that are particularly vulnerable and in need. We select camps to serve that get no other support. We select the areas that are the most disenfranchised, the poorest, the most in need. We give to all these families in one area so no one is left out, no one is “selected” over the other based on who they can reach out to on the internet for advocacy on their behalf. Instead, we support all of them to ensure equity and fair access to our aid. We are these families’ advocates. Here are 60 blankets going to the Al-Mutahabeen Camp in Khan Younis.
