A little update on how Audacity 4 is progressing. We've just about completed all the core editing work now and I wanted to demonstrate some of the workflow improvements we've included. Let me know if you'd like more little updates like this.

Here's exactly how we're going to do that onboarding. When you delete a clip, we show this once. (You can change again in preferences at any time btw). I should mention that these images animate, so it's super clear what each option does.

Will you also support Spectogram view? I use it primarily instead of the normal Waveform view solely because it is so much more easier to see exactly when beats hit. It makes splicing already mixed+rendered tracks so much more easier.

Yes, that's vital! The plan is to port over everything - apart from totally unused or redundant features (like the Karaoke feature or VST2 support. No point anymore). We may release a beta without spectrogram view and add it in the next release but that's not the current plan.

You're showing how open source tools should be crafted - with care and precision. I'm one who believes creative software should be more accessible - without piracy or shakedowns. I am usually elated to see people further this dream.
Hi @Tantacrul, thank you for this spectacular work! Please, try that memory requirements don't grow up a lot compared with previous versions 🥺

Did you consider asking the user’s preference whenever they first try to delete a section, rather than as part of on-boarding?

Snap. I was just posting that exact idea under this post. Check it out.

Video/podcast editor here, (global) ripple delete is probably one the most used operations in my workflow. From personal experience, the Shift+Delete shortcut is very tedious because of the distance between the two keys. I actually had to remap it in Premiere to avoid arm strain

As someone who knows video editing, this is just having a delete vs a ripple delete. Keeping them both available under "hotkey" and "hotkey + modifier" makes it nice and intuitive.

from a glance I have no idea what these two buttons would do

They're legacy Audacity icons. Some people swear by them. I find them a bit unnecessary myself. They'll be visible in the 'classic' workspace. We've gone with the same ones you see in AU3 so existing users know what they do.
