Scott Hall killed a man. At age 25, Hall was bartending at a strip club when a man confronted him at his workplace after discovering Hall was dating the man's wife. A fight broke out, and when the man reached for his gun, a struggle ensued. Hall managed to seize the weapon and shot the man in the head. Hall was charged with 2nd degree murder but the case was dismissed because the evidence against him was deemed insufficient. Scott Hall indicated that this incident had a lasting mental and emotional impact on him.

In 1961, he published The Myth of Mental Illness and showed that mental illness is a metaphor, not a literal disease like a broken bone or infection. For decades, the field explained depression as a chemical imbalance that pills could fix, and Szasz called the whole story a myth. But a 2022 review led by psychiatrist Joanna Moncrieff found no consistent evidence for the specific serotonin theory behind it. Szasz summed up his life’s work by naming what was happening: the psychiatrization of the whole culture. And it is still expanding, one diagnosis at a time.

After I shared the video, his wife reached out to me and requested that I visit him to understand the true situation. This evening, I met him and his family, and I learned that he is not homeless. He is a married man, a father of five children, and has been living with his family in Texas, USA. According to his family, he has bipolar disorder, and his condition became worse after the passing of his mother. He is currently under medical care and takes prescribed medication. The family explained that during some episodes of his illness, he may leave home and wander the streets. This has led many people to believe that he is homeless, which is not true. They also shared that he has a passion for recycling and environmental conservation, which is why he is sometimes seen collecting recyclable materials or around dumpsites. I would like to clarify to the general public that this man is not homeless. He has a loving family that cares deeply for him. When you see him on the streets, please do not judge or discriminate against him. Instead, treat him with dignity, kindness, and respect, knowing that he is living with a mental health condition. The family has also appealed to the public not to buy him alcohol or give him weed, as both can interfere with his prescribed medication and may seriously affect his health. Let us replace stigma with understanding and compassion. Mental health conditions can affect anyone, and those living with them deserve our support, respect, and humanity.
