Cultures that have “3rd gender” roles are exclusively for effeminate men within sexist patriarchal cultures. These men were relegated to women’s status to protect narrow definitions of masculinity. No such new roles were offered to women who wanted to gain leadership status or male roles. 2. 2 spirit is a newly coined term that perpetuates a kind of “noble savage myth” those who use it are akin to the girls who wear a feather headdress at Coachella.
