The word manatee is thought to come from the Carib word for “woman’s breast” or “udder” or the Latin word for “having hands”. There are three species of manatees: the West Indian manatee, the West African manatee, and the Amazonian manatee. Manatees are herbivores, which means they only feed on plants. Manatees eat 7-15% of their body weight in vegetation every day. Manatees can live in both freshwater and saltwater, but they need access to freshwater to stay hydrated. Manatees need warm water to survive, as they have low metabolic rates and minimal fat insulation. They can suffer from cold stress if the water temperature drops below 20°C (68°F). Manatee calves can stay with their mother for several years, learning how to find food, shelter, and warm water. Manatees are often called “sea cows” because of their grazing habits and cow-like appearance.
