Pilots, myself included, frequently notice how incredibly dry the cockpit feels. This happens because the fresh air delivered by the aircraft’s PACKs is deliberately very dry - typically with a relative humidity of just 3%. On airplanes, the only meaningful source of extra moisture comes from the people on board. This means the actual humidity level varies according to passenger numbers. In sparsely occupied zones like the flight deck, relative humidity usually stays at only about 5%. In more crowded cabin sections, it can reach about 15%. The recirculation system helps keep humidity slightly higher by recirculating the humid cabin air. Even though this dryness can make your eyes irritated, your nose dry, or your throat scratchy, research shows it doesn't cause any harmful health effects. Studies have found there's no medical reason to add humidity to the cabin air.

Here comes the haze 😶‍🌫️ Wildfire smoke will pour from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia all the way to Florida by Monday. Most of it will remain high above the ground, but poor air quality is likely in the Northwest and possible in the Plains.

Well, this is bad. As winds shift on Monday and Tuesday, lots of wildfire smoke is forecast to blow toward the coast in the Pacific Northwest, reaching Portland, Seattle and Vancouver — greatly reducing air quality. Some smoke will also spill into California.
