That video you described - mother on a branch showing the cub exactly where to put its paws, going head-first down - is classic leopard school. The masterclass you saw: Leopards are the best climbers of the big cats. Cubs start climbing at ∼2-3 months but going DOWN is scary - they have to go backwards or head-first, claws hooked in bark. What the mother does is: - Comes down first, slowly - Stops, looks up, vocalizes (soft chirps) - Places paws deliberately so cub can mirror the grip - Waits mid-trunk to correct footing It's pure social learning, not instinct. Trust the experts: Parents. Parents know their children better than anyone. Mainstream media can keep gaslighting parents who watched their child regress after a well visit. Pharmaceutical companies can keep publishing all the “studies” they want to telling us their products are safe. But none of that erases what a parent witnessed with their own eyes. We need to empower parents to trust their instincts. We need to empower mothers to trust the innate wisdom that comes from carrying, birthing and knowing their babies in a way no doctor, researcher or government agency ever could. When a mother says her child changed before her eyes after a shot.. that the light left their eyes, that her child went from saying 100 words to completely non verbal, that they’re baby is now head banging and incapable of walking when they had been walking for months, that the child they knew was suddenly different… she deserves to be heard. A group of orphaned baby opossums lost their mother after she was attacked and killed in Brazil. I can’t help but smile whenever I think of the image of a bear casually floating on an inflatable raft in a swimming pool. Not in a zoo, and not in a cartoon, but right in the backyard of an ordinary home 🐻💓 Ricardo and Brian live in the first house right next to a national forest. When they first moved in, they were warned that the area was home to many bears. But they never expected those furry visitors to choose their swimming pool as their favorite place to cool off. The first time they noticed the pool water moving strangely, they were completely caught off guard. A bear was swimming around as naturally as if the pool belonged to him. Instead of screaming or chasing it away, they simply stood back, watched, and started recording. From then on, the bears began showing up more often. Some would simply lie in the water for a while before casually wandering back into the forest. Others seemed to enjoy playing with the floating pool toys like children. And Maddie, the female bear they became most familiar with, practically became a regular visitor. The most memorable moment came when Maddie brought along her two cubs. The two little bears were still very young, toddling around the edge of the pool while their mother leisurely swam from one end to the other. Ricardo and Brian said they were both surprised and deeply moved. The fact that a mother bear felt comfortable enough to bring her cubs there seemed to say a great deal. What I like most about this story is not only how adorable the bears are, but also the way the two homeowners respond to them. They do not feed the bears, try to approach them, or turn them into pets. They simply keep a safe distance, close their windows and doors, and spend their time observing. What began as fear gradually became something they came to regard as a privilege. Watching this story, I find myself wondering how I would react if I woke up one morning and found a bear swimming in my backyard. I would probably panic too. But Ricardo and Brian chose a different approach: they accepted that they were sharing their space with wildlife. They understood that they were living on land that had long been home to these creatures. Perhaps that is why the bears feel safe there. They are not chased away or threatened, so they simply come to enjoy the water and then return to the forest. .James Talarico: I think about the maternal mortality crisis, where you see Black women dying at three times the rate of other mothers. And so I've rolled out a plan in consultation with a lot of community leaders to figure out what we can do to address this crisis. And that's ensuring that every new mother, including every Black mother, has access to prenatal care and paid family leave so that after they give birth they can tend to their own health and the health of their child. There's so much that we could do at the federal level to save the lives of Black mothers all across the state. Another issue that I think impacts Black Texans particularly is voting rights and gerrymandering — probably the biggest attack on Black political power since Jim Crow. They are systematically diluting the voting power of Black and brown Texans. And so these two issues in particular I think need a lot of spotlight.

There's so much that we could do at the federal level to save the lives of Black mothers all across the state. Another issue that I think impacts Black Texans particularly is voting rights and gerrymandering — probably the biggest attack on Black political power since Jim Crow. They are systematically diluting the voting power of Black and brown Texans. And so these two issues in particular I think need a lot of spotlight.

Why Can a Dog Adopt the Young of Another Species? 🦁💓 A lioness gave birth to two cubs but did not care for them. The two lion cubs quickly became weak, leaving the park staff with no choice but to find another mother who could nurse them. The one chosen was Sandra, an eight-year-old German Shepherd who had recently given birth. Sandra had milk and was caring for her own puppy. What happened next was remarkable. When the two lion cubs were brought to her, Sandra accepted them and allowed them to nurse alongside her own puppy. It is hard not to smile at the sight. A dog lies down while three young animals press close to her body: one puppy and two lion cubs. But what made Sandra accept young animals from another species? Part of the answer lies in the timing. Sandra had just given birth, her body was producing milk, and behaviours such as staying close to her young, grooming them, keeping them warm and nursing them were already taking place naturally. Hormonal changes after giving birth also help promote maternal care in mother dogs. In other words, Sandra was at exactly the stage of life when caring for small, dependent animals had become a natural part of her daily life. The two lion cubs were also showing clear signs of young animals in need of care. They were small and weak, needed warmth and milk, and then sought out Sandra’s body to nurse. To us, a dog and a lion are two very different species. But maternal behaviour in animals does not necessarily begin with deciding, “This is a dog” or “This is a lion”. In this situation, what Sandra encountered were young animals seeking care. Researchers have recorded mothers nursing young that are not their own in many mammalian species. This behaviour is known as allonursing, and it can occur when circumstances lead a mother to accept additional young alongside her own offspring. Perhaps the sweetest part of Sandra’s story is that she did not have to choose between her own puppy and the two little visitors. Her puppy remained beside her, while the two lion cubs were also allowed to snuggle against her and nurse alongside it. On Sunday, California Department of Fish and Wildlife brought 3 orphaned mountain lion cubs to Oakland Zoo’s vet hospital. The trio, estimated to be about 3 months old, were found in Portola Valley. CDFW believes the mother of these cubs is the same female mountain lion that was killed by a car in the same area. The three siblings (2 males and 1 female), are thin but relatively healthy. Their care team at our veterinary hospital has given them the names Thistle, Spruce, and Fern (Fern is the female). In the wild, mountain lion cubs need about two years with their mother in the wild to learn survival skills. Because these cubs are so young, they lack those skills and sadly cannot return to the wild. Instead, we will work with CDFW to find these cubs a new forever home at an appropriate institution. While they are with us, we will take great care of these orphaned cubs, and, we will continue to take action to reduce human-wildlife conflict and make our shared living spaces safer for all animals.
