Speaking as a non-Christian, the first word that comes to mind when I see depictions of the Crucifixion, or indeed any martyrdom, is Macabre. Adoration of torture, exaltation of pain just seems odd, somehow, and to base an entire faith on such feels warped. Just my opinion.
