This is great, @maxsiollun is one of my favorite authors. You can also watch the Netflix documentary series Journey of an African Colony: The Making of Nigeria (2019) by Olasupo Shasore. Its really fun to watch.

@maxsiollun Nice thank you! Yes I had that documentary on my list but I'm trying to focus more on more recent history, but I will watch it eventually

You are doing a great job. I translate and interpret Yoruba language and culture at Duke University so you can reach out anytime you need help. You might also want to watch Saworo Ide, the movie explores the origin of exploitation and concentration of community

Thank you 🙏🏾

I don't know whether it has been suggested, but I think you'd enjoy reading my book 'Nigerian Gods' It's about how traditional religions in 13 Nigerian ethnic groups were displaced by colonialism & the introduction of Abrahamic religions. Available: Rovingheights or Quintessence

Wow this sounds really great! I will see if I can order from Rovingheights

Amazing, I hope you like it 🤞🏽

I see you are in the details .. Impressive !

Community wealth by and in the hands of few political elites.

I would love to hear your progress particularly on the Yoruba language 😃

nice work, ire. you're inspiring me to pick up books again. if you're looking for books on the civil war, i recommend: the tragedy of victory by godwin alabi-isama & my command by olusegun obasanjo

Oh wow. Hoping to read / watch a review about the non-Abeahamic religions book.

Your journey into Non-Abrahamic Religions and Yoruba Language is 🔥! What's the most eye-opening book so far? 🤲

I really enjoyed "Wisdom of the Orishas", it was so interesting to see how intertwined Yoruba language, culture, and religion are.

The Orishas' wisdom is endless! Which story spoke to you most?

I really enjoyed the story of Obatala and their journey with alcohol. It demonstrated how the Orishas are themselves fallible and how they, like humans, also need to evolve.

Obatala's journey mirrors ours - stars don't shine without first burning through darkness. 🔥🤲

I'm doing this with you. I just finished reading Max Siollun's The forgotten era: Nigeria Before British Rule and it's fascinating, especially to someone who wants to have deep comprehension of religious intricacies, origin of tribe, and whatnot.

Nice! I look forward to reading the rest of his books, I think The Forgotten Era will be so interesting, I haven't seen any books that really cover that period

Exactly.

This was VERY interesting, I’ll have to check out those books. If you’re still looking for material on Nigeria’s political history, I seriously recommend checking out the paper I’ve posted below. The author works as a research director in DC and she’s incredibly articulate.

Watch koto aiye

Saworide is a really nice movie to watch for Yoruba language. Beautiful story line , beautiful delivery. Honestly start with any Tunde Kelani movie or watch all.

This is interesting! But if I may ask, what inspired you?

Many things! I've recently been reading up on African history post-colonialism, and I wanted to learn more on Nigeria specifically. Improving my Yoruba has been a life-long goal. On the religions, I think I saw a Tiktok comparing Buddhism vs Christianity, and was inspired 😅

Kudos! Keep it up 👍

Amazing! Please start a book club 🙌🏿

This is lovely. Please, how do you get to go through all the materials? I mean, do you go through the materials of non abrahamic religions, Yoruba and Nigerian history everyday, 3 of them every day? Or do you have days allocated to each one?

Thank you! Oh I definitely don't have time to do all 3 every day haha. In a week I typically focus on 2 subjects, so I'll be reading one book for Nigeria political history for example, and also watch a documentary for Non-Abrahamic religions. Then switch. I have a fulltime job so I probably spend 5-10hours / week on this personal study.

🙏🙏

Good job! I recently started a Yoruba language community magazine. You can read it here online and also download the PDF - The plan is to spread the culture of community magazine to all Yoruba communities - sub-ethnicities, lineages, cities/towns.

Well done! A small suggestion: when you have time, read What Is History? by E.H. Carr and The Practice of History by G.R. Elton. Both will sharpen your understanding of perspective—history is rarely a neutral recounting of the past.

Thanks for the suggestions! These sound interesting but because of limited time I'm trying to focus more on more recent Nigerian political history, but these are interesting as general history texts as well

For Yoruba language films, try out the works of baba Tunde Kelani @tkelani.

I'm also on this path. QQ, how do you get your books? Especially the Nigerian Political history

Mostly Amazon and Roving Heights!

Bravo! Listening to Yorùbá news daily, will help greatly. If you're a Christian, reading combined Yorùbá+ English bible helps. On a lighter note, gossiping and cussing in Yorùbá >>> Do you follow @StartArchiving?

@StartArchiving Thank you! Any resources for listening to Yorùbá news? And yes I've looked at @StartArchiving , great resource!

@StartArchiving The state television/radio stations of Ògùn, Ọ̀yọ́, Ondó, Ọ̀ṣun, Èkìtì on YouTube. Some of their OAPs are also on tiktok

@StartArchiving Thank you!
