A young woman broke down in tears after allegedly being defrauded of about GHS 8,000 by mobile money scammers who posed as officials from MTN. According to the victim, she received a phone call from individuals claiming to be from the telecom company, who threatened to block her mobile money account. Fearing the consequences, she said she was instructed to visit multiple mobile money agents to transfer funds in order to “secure” her account. In a state of panic, the woman complied and sent the money in several transactions before later realising she had been deceived.

According to reports, the woman visited the shop claiming she needed items worth GHS7,000 for her mini shop. After the goods were selected and packed, she said she did not have physical cash and asked to step out to withdraw money nearby. Moments after she left, the shop owner became suspicious and decided to check her bag, only to realize that money had gone missing. The woman was quickly pursued and apprehended with the stolen money in her possession. She has since been handed over to the Madina Police for further investigations.
