A mom asks her 18-year-old working daughter to contribute $50–$100 a month while she’s still living at home. The daughter refuses, arguing that she shouldn’t have to pay anything simply because she lives with her mom. Is the mom being reasonable by asking her daughter to contribute, or is...

Dam that’s crazy, I started helping moms with bills as soon as I got my first summer youth job at 14 years old. This generation are not only as dumb as it can get but also as selfish as it can get.

She learned this behavior at home. The girl is wrong for not helping, but the mother is wrong for all the yelling and acting out. Respect your mother and her house, but Mom, there’s a better way to handle it. She didn’t just become selfish at 18—this behavior starts somewhere.

She should calm with the way she’s easing her voice lol If she’s 18, working, and living at home, contributing $50–$100 a month is a reasonable request—not punishment. Helping with household expenses teaches responsibility.

This mom is trash. My kids are my kids no matter their age. They will get whatever money they need if it is in my power to supply it no matter their age. 18 is just a number. If she’s having a hard time at 18 with whatever her mom should have her back. And also who yells at their kids like this? I’m sorry for this young woman.

This is such a weird American concept to me. Why would you want to start collecting money from your child just bcuz they are now 18 as if that means they are actually now an adult or something? I mean legally yes but not mentally or emotionally Where is the love and compassion

Once a son or daughter turns 18, starts earning, and is still living at home, asking them to contribute a reasonable amount toward household expenses isn’t automatically unfair. Parents spend years providing food, shelter, education, and countless other necessities. Once an adult child starts earning, contributing something whether $50, $100, or an amount appropriate to the family’s situation can be about responsibility and gratitude, not “renting a room” from your parents. It should be a reasonable conversation, not a punishment. But expecting an earning adult to contribute nothing while the parents carry every expense can also become a sense of entitlement.

She is practicing for adulthood by not paying rent. She is gonna be living rent free off a man or the government anyway so she might as well start early.

When you reach 18, the contract ends, you are now an adult. You either contribute to the family as an adult or learn to pack your bags. I was paying rent at the age of 17, while working and going to college at night.

$50-100 a month while living at home with a job isn’t really about the money In the shelter u see the long-term result of ppl who never had to contribute anything while young The amount is small. The pattern is not Curious how many arguing she shouldn’t pay a cent actually stayed home rent-free well into their 20s

I don't charge my adult a dime to live in my house. That's what's wrong with the black community, that's why we don't have generational wealth, yt ppl don't do they kids like this, and we truly need to stop this mess.

Some residential places, To renew the lease, you have to let them know about the extra income so therefore, they would have to contribute since she’s the extra adult on the lease that’s deemed responsible. If she’s going to school full time, that’ll be credited however still. To be honest, if youre over 18, and have a job, yes you should contribute. You don’t have to pay the rent at least get home toiletries. That’s what $50-$100 would contribute anyways.
