This morning, at 7:35am BST, a piece of SpaceX rocket was set to unintentionally crash into the moon at a speed of 5,400mph. The four-tonne piece of the rocket was part of a launch in January 2025. It was never intended to hit the moon, but its path has gradually been altered by gravitational pulls. Don't worry, the crash poses no danger to those on earth, but is expected to blast one million kilograms of debris into space and form a new lunar crater.

Artemis was a great test of going around the moon. However the Artemis rocket system has the same problem as the Apollo missions to the moon. It costs too much. The Artemis rocket, SLS, was designed by the US Senate. $4 billion per launch. And can only launch once each 2 years. We can’t build a moon base with this system. SLS was a rocket designed by politicians to create jobs for the old Space Shuttle contractors. They spent 15 years and $25 billion developing it, and it will never be cost effective at $4 billion per launch. It is an obsolete rocket already. It works, but it will eventually die due to budget cuts.

It has been a year since I have been out of the country. Coming back to India after one year and landing right during the space day celebrations was a moment that I was not prepared for. The excitement, buzz and curiosity towards space has filled me with strong emotions and resolve towards our own missions. During the past year of training I travelled across the globe but the excitement for upcoming Indian human space missions was seen everywhere. People wanted to know when will Gaganyaan go, they want to travel to space with us. Let us make this age a golden one for space exploration together. So why is it that NASA, with unlimited resources, can’t or won’t, deploy a telescope on Artemis II, or any of the 10,000 satellites - to film & zoom in on the Earth from space. It should be so simple and everyone wants to see it, so why won’t NASA do this Grok ?
