"A new Caesar will come,” we are warned. But is this a genuine caution, or the shameless self-preservation of the liberal elite? With comparisons to Trump, The BBC and PBS team up to deliver a puzzling revulsion to Europe's greatest man of action: 🧵

Julius Caesar, master of Gaul, now faces his greatest challenge: Subduing the hearts of a selection of podcast hosts, human rights lawyers, and other such experts. Where is he going wrong?

We are reliably informed that Caesar ruined a land of blissful, uninterrupted democracy... The only man in Rome to be guilty of possessing ambition—Caesar—is portrayed as the cause, not a symptom, of the Republic's demise.

The message, repeated ad nauseam, is that Caesar is a populist—he doesn’t really care about the plight of the Romans. But rather than questioning the Republic and the senators who enabled a hungry, desperate people, the scrutiny falls on the man acting to ease their suffering.

Caesar's nemesis, Cato, filibusters to obstruct a bill that would reward Pompey's heroic veterans. When Caesar instead puts the vote to the people, bypassing the self-serving Senate, he is accused of 'playing populares'... The viewer is presumably meant to be horrified.

And so, after frequently comparing ancient Rome to our modern democracies... ...ominous music begins to play as Caesar... ahem... allows the people to vote on the matter! "...the echoes with Trump are obvious," exclaims Rory.

Episode two starts strongly: Caesar is accused of genocide against the people of Gaul, who he is also racist against. In case that didn't make you hate him, Caesar is then shown to randomly drown a man (?).

Caesar's conquest of Gaul is dismissed as a ploy for political gain, and his brilliant commentaries reduced to propaganda. Meanwhile, his Britannia expedition is mocked as a failure, with his greatness attributed more to his pen than his martial triumphs in Gaul and beyond.

When the Senate is accidentally set alight, the scene is impressively compared to the January 6th Capitol Riots of 2021: "...it's as terrifying as the spectacle of the Capitol being invaded by an angry mob under Trump."

After the Civil War, which, like Gaul, is entirely skipped, Caesar does not kill Cato but instead offers clemency. Rory then compares accepting Caesar's olive branch to appeasing Hitler in the 1930s.

At the festival of Lupercalia, Caesar is presented with a diadem (a crown). The docudrama suggests that Caesar wished to become king, but declined the diadem only upon hearing the crowd’s hostile reaction. In reality, it likely unfolded as follows: Antony presents Caesar with the diadem, and the crowd grows silent. When Caesar turns it down, the crowd cheers. When offered the diadem a second time, the cheers grow louder as he declines again. The event was most likely a calculated move, aimed moreso at publicly dispelling the embarrassing rumours circulating at the time that he sought to become king.

The thinly-veiled propaganda concludes strongly with a series of patronising speeches. In a docudrama aired shortly before the UK, US and French elections, the viewer is once again reminded to not take our ‘political norms’ for granted:

22.09.2024 #Self-Preservation The basic human instinct to protect them from harm, harsh or difficult moments/environment. As humans, we self preserve emotionally, physically, biologically, spiritually, mentally and otherwise. Self - Preservation is the very essence of the emergence of IPOB which consequently, gave birth to ESN. To protect our people from the the heinous and atrocious massacring of men, children and women. In most cases, after raping the women. ESN was created to preserve the lives of Biafrans. Here, on the social media space, mental and social preservation go through in the form of teachings and information dissemination by every member of IPOB under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. #NnamdiKanu is suffering because of the Self-Preservation instinct he extended to his people. While those who are oblivious to what self preservation is, kill and kidnap their own people. Igbos are known to be naturally conscious of this trait, of which they always extend to strangers. Where has that consciousness gone to? The Igbos who once came together to build schools in their communities, health centers, town halls, airports and etc? The Igbos that would come together to form a vigilante group to overcome any evil cult or crime group that emerges in their community? How are we now replaced with souls that seek nothing but the blood of their brothers and sisters? Which beg me to ask, are these souls Biafran souls or is this a case of contaminated blood? We have to reactivate our Self-Preservation instincts and skills to preserve our blood lines, our culture and safe existence. As of today, a liter of petrol is over #1, 500 (naira) in some places. My head is about to split due to so much cry for help. Elderly ones in several villages can no longer afford water let alone food. So this is a call for Economical-Preservation. How can you help preserve the helpless elderly ones and children? I have taken it upon myself to resuscitate an abandoned stream in a certain village. And call on everyone here for an Extended Self-preservation challenge. If you have or know villages with streams, give it out as a project for the youth in that community to clear the stream path to make water available for the villagers for the sake of the children and elderly! This is because, ever since the emergence of borehole water, everyone resorted to it, leaving behind the spring waters and their path maintenance. Now, with the hike in fuel price, the borehole owners can barely pump water for sale as there is little or no electricity in some of these places. People can barely afford a meal in a day. Rather than sending money to 1 or few people, do something for the community. This is a self-preserving act. Let's go back to how we were using a sustainable hydro system. Since the first cell of life had a tendency towards self-preservation, life as a whole, including human life, inherited this trait. However, over time, people realized that strict biological rules were insufficient for self-preservation, and they began to incorporate softer, more humane means. They further recognized that it's not just about mere survival, but about living a dignified and meaningful existence. Yes, we understand this well today, but we are moving too slowly in this direction. We must deeply realize that we are now at a different level of life's complexity, and without a humane and exalted way of life, we will not achieve not only a meaningful and prosperous life but even simple self-preservation. : The author traces life’s self-preservation instinct from its first cell to humanity, noting that people recognized biological rules alone were insufficient, embracing humane means for survival. They realized life demands dignity and meaning beyond mere existence. Though understood today, progress toward this ideal is slow. Humanity’s advanced complexity requires a humane, exalted lifestyle to achieve not only meaningful prosperity but also basic self-preservation. This perspective highlights the urgency of elevating existence through compassion and purpose. It warns that neglecting this risks both fulfillment and survival. The call is for a profound commitment to a dignified life, aligning with life’s evolved intricacy to ensure a thriving future.
