Finance apps that ask for full access to contacts, messages, photos, etc. are a red flag, especially if it's a loan app. A lot of these lending apps are digital avatars of predatory moneylenders (Sudakhor in Hindi). The number of people getting fleeced by shady and illegal loan apps has gone up significantly. Many individuals caught up in the web of these apps frequently resort to drastic actions, such as suicide. For every illegal loan app that's banned, two new ones pop-up. It's become a game of whack-a-mole. What makes these apps disgusting is the fact that many of them deduct as much as 10% upfront. Then there's the fact that interest rates range from 50% to 100%, or even 200%+. It's impossible for people who borrow on these apps to repay with such usurious terms. But considering people who borrow on these apps are desperate, they don't notice the fine print. Traditional loan sharks resort to physical threats to recover money. These loan apps harass people by calling all their contacts and sharing private photos and lewd pictures that are morphed. I have always wondered: What if someone uses a new SIM and phone with no contacts, photos, or messages? What would these apps do to recover money if someone gamed this system? Jason (bottom) runs the company and oversees product, Brian (top right) is Basecamp's product manager, and Andy (top left) is the designer who's been working on this specific feature. In this session we review a design that's about to ship to customers, but that we're not completely internally satisfied with. All designs are tradeoffs, and we're not entirely sure that we've made the right ones in this case. We work through a few different options, compare them to what we're about to ship, and ultimately decide to go in a simpler direction with fewer tradeoffs. We think it works best all things considered, while the original design may have worked best nothing else considered. The feature is now live in everyone's Basecamp account. But, these things are complex legal things and this is not of one page. We have thousands of items between our two nations that we are working on. And so the fact that we've gone so far, that is a great sign for the relationship and I am hopeful that we will be able to wrap this up sooner than later."

The Blind Spot: Vertebrates have an inverted retina, where photoreceptors face away from light and nerves bundle through a hole in the back, creating a tiny blind spot. RPE supplies massive nutrients/oxygen (vertebrate photoreceptors have the body's highest metabolic rate) and removes toxic byproducts from light detection. RPE's dark pigment absorbs stray light, giving a sharper image, and protects against sun damage, which makes our eyes last longer and stay healthier.
