#WATCH | Delhi | On HPV vaccination importance for 14-year-old girls, ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl says, “We are talking about the HPV virus, which is the only intervention we have which can actually prevent cervical cancer in women. Cervical cancer kills at least 70,000 – 80,000 women every year in our country… HPV infection is caused due to sexual contact and is very common… When the infection remains for a long time, it can develop into cancer… the vaccine prevents HPV infection in girls, protecting them from cervical cancer…”

Cervical cancer is among the top 4 most common cancers in the world and ranks 3rd in Pakistan among the most prevalent cancers in women. Around 50–60 women per million are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in Pakistan, and this figure is still speculative because of the lack of tools and screening for monitoring this cancer. The actual numbers may be much higher. Every year, about 3,200 women die in Pakistan from a disease that has a preventive vaccine. WHO standards suggest that all girls aged 9–14 should be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine to help end this deadly form of cancer. More than 100 countries routinely administer this vaccine as part of their immunisation schedule. In Pakistan, a two-week vaccination campaign has been started by the Government of Sindh, running from 15th to 27th September 2025. The purpose of this campaign is to provide the vaccine free of cost to girls across the province to protect them from cervical cancer in the future. I urge all parents to take their daughters to these vaccination centres and make sure they are immunised against this virus, to prevent the occurrence of cervical cancer as they grow up. Prevention is easier than cure and it saves lives.

I thank the First Spouses and Partners of Commonwealth countries for their advocacy in the fight to eliminate cervical cancer. #CHOGM2024

Too many women are dying quietly from a disease we can prevent. For many, access to healthcare is still out of reach, screenings are delayed, warning signs are missed, and cervical cancer continues to take mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends far too soon. We couldn’t solve it all, but we chose to play our part. We set out to host a cervical cancer screening in Abuja for 1,000 women, and by the end, we had screened over 1000. There’s much more needs to be done. There are still countless people with limited access to care, still more lives that can be protected. We will continue to do all we can to save as many lives as possible, that is THE MISSION.
