I will never forget this post I made back in July, 2024. You see I absolutely knew this video was legitimate. Why, because I had the information pertaining to who took it and the associated proof. I sent that proof to those I knew who believed it was AI. Some backtracked, but not before Grok picked up the "experts'" blurbs and Voila, all of the sudden Truth became fiction. The Blogger/Aiden Kearney/Turtle Boy was a magician. I have always said this. He rivaled Goebels with his propaganda in the Karen Read case. This is just one example. Kearney didn't uncover truth behind what happened to John O'Keefe. Instead he masterfully disguised the Truth with a ridiculous lie and convinced millions to believe it. Whether you like him or hate him, that's the momentous task he accomplished. I dare say, I don't know if anyone else could have convinced people to ignore facts and believe that a minor, an ATF Agent, a police officer, and a family pet killed a man they all liked for no particular reason and then cover up their murder by disposing of their dead victim in their front yard. AJ didn't win the case. Kearney won the case because he succeeded in tainting the jury pool. Brian Chesky gave the perfect 10 minute hero's journey story a few weeks ago at Config. Founders and CEOs are always looking for great examples of storytelling, speaking, and leadership. This right here is as good as it gets. Why did it work so well? To start with it's 9 minutes and 49 seconds. That's a length that people are familiar and comfortable with as evidenced by Ted Talks ranging from around 10-18 minutes. From there he structured it using the Hero's Journey framework from Joseph Campbell. Ordinary world-call to adventure-mentors-death and rebirth-gifts-return changed. I'm going to do another post soon mapping this all out for you. Today I want to go deeper into other parts of the storytelling that he nailed. To begin with what you'll see is he immediately takes you right into the action. He starts with "Back in 2019" and then transports you even further back in time with "Back to Rhode Island School of Design". This puts you directly in the story. You're seeing it happen. It's a bit like Back to the Future. From there he immediately goes into the Origin Story. The AirBnB origin story is a key part of the larger ongoing story. So he starts there. Chesky knows he needs to set the frame that the audience will analyze the story through so he does what many great speakers do... He uses a rhetorical question. "What if design ran the boardroom?" Boom. That's the big idea. That's the theme of the rest of the talk. From there he gives a bit of a nod to Nancy Duarte's classic framework of What is versus What could be. This is done by putting forth two different worlds that AirBnB (and other companies) can live in. Option 1: Dream world. This world is creative and embraces risk. Option 2: Reality world. This world is corporate and clinical. What he does next speaks to every founder and CEO. He calls out what prevents him from living in the dream world and it's one word. Fear. So as he goes through the story he gets to the moment of transformation. 2020 changed everything. He uses a metaphor to show this near death experience for the company. Not only that but he uses a classic story device of having a dream and seeing the better way forward. It's also a bit of a reference to The Matrix. "I woke up from a 10 yr slumber". And it's there that the mentors give him this lift. Hiroki Asai and Johnny Ives put Chesky back on the path he first set out on. Design led company. The results took AirBnB from breakeven to 4 billion dollars in Free Cash Flow. Now that's one powerful transformation. Transformation is one of the things great stories embrace. To show other people that it's possible. His final takeaway brings everything home. Companies need both the head and the heart. It's a subtle nod to that first big question he asked to set the frame. What would it look like if design ran the boardroom? A company with both head and heart to build something magical.

There's already talk of stripping wolves of federal protection entirely. Trump signed an executive order giving his administration 90 days to decide whether to move forward. That wouldn't touch wolves inside Yellowstone's boundary, protection there doesn't come from this law anyway. But wild animals don't know where that boundary is. Last night, I had the joy of attending a conversation at Brooklyn's Pioneer Works, part of an impressive continuing series on scientific controversies moderated by Janna Levin. She brought together Yann LeCun of Meta (for now), and Adam Brown of Google DeepMind for what evolved into a brilliant debate on whether LLMs will take the technology to its oft-promised land (Brown's stance) or whether new paradigms are required to teach programs how the world works, as four-year-olds or cats learn through experience. I'm on Team Yann. He presented a bracing and realistic vision for AI that can get smarter on a new track, one that provides invaluable assistance to humans, that is in human control, and that can - can - open paths to a new Renaissance. (That last will be up to us.) Yann has been the AI pioneer I trust more than any other, for he brings sense and sobriety, experience and perspective to a field overrun with hyperbole, hype, and messianic doom. Last night, I heard a fuller explication of his vision - which, according to the FT, he may soon bring to fruition as it reports he will leave Meta to found a startup. Many cannot wait to hear more; the room was overflowing. I've been honored to interview Yann on the AI Inside podcast (whence came the invitation to last night's event). I'll share more reflections about the discussion on this week's show.
