The DUP suddenly talking about pluralism and belonging while offering precious little vision beyond Sinn Féin, Sinn Féin, Sinn Féin. Michelle O’Neill, republicanism, Dublin, Irish unity, the Irish language, there always has to be something Irish to oppose or fear. These political dinosaurs desperately need a politics for the future rather than continually fighting the battles of the past. And history matters here. This is the party whose founder Ian Paisley and senior figures Peter Robinson and Sammy Wilson, Along with the TUV leader Jim Allister, appeared at the 1986 launch of Ulster Resistance, which subsequently became associated with loyalist arms smuggling, weapons from that shipment reached the UDA and UVF and were used in killings. The deputy first ministers father actually ran the smuggling, but yet we still get lectures about Sinn Féin’s “murky past”. So spare us the sudden sermon about nobody being “diminished.” If the DUP genuinely wants to make the Union attractive, where is the vision? Where is the plan for better healthcare, stronger public services, economic growth, jobs and opportunities that reaches beyond the constitutional argument? After decades at the centre of unionist politics, sectarian nonsense, “Sinn Féin bad” is still not a vision for Northern Ireland. And declaring the Union the “only choice for everyone” while preaching about respecting everybody’s identity rather gives the game away. Stop telling people what to fear. Stop defining yourselves by what you oppose. Tell Northern Ireland what the DUP is actually FOR, seriously what do you actually stand for?
