A horrifying midair collision over the Austrian Alps was captured on a helmet camera as a small sightseeing plane flew directly through a paraglider’s canopy, sending the woman into a terrifying, screaming free fall thousands of feet above the mountains. The dramatic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon near Schmittenhöhe mountain in the Salzburg region of Austria, a popular spot for paragliding. 44-year-old experienced paraglider Sabrina was gliding peacefully alongside an alpine ridge when a Cessna 172 sightseeing plane suddenly appeared behind her. The aircraft’s propeller and landing gear tore straight through her pink canopy, shredding the wing in an instant. Helmet camera footage, which has since gone viral, shows the serene flight turning into chaos within seconds. The plane slices through the fabric just above her head, causing the paraglider to spin violently out of control. Sabrina can be heard screaming as she plummets toward the ground, desperately fighting to stabilize herself. Despite the catastrophic damage to her main canopy, the experienced paraglider managed to deploy her reserve parachute. She landed safely in a forested area, narrowly avoiding trees, and suffered only minor bruises and contusions. The 28-year-old pilot of the Cessna also landed safely at nearby Zell am See Airport with minor damage to his aircraft. Both were taken for medical checks but escaped serious injury. Salzburg State Police confirmed the collision, stating that “the propeller of the motor plane severely damaged the paraglider, prompting the experienced paraglider to deploy her reserve parachute.” The pilot told authorities he was unable to avoid the collision. The footage has shocked viewers worldwide, highlighting the dangers of shared airspace between small aircraft and paragliders in busy alpine regions. Sabrina later shared her relief online, writing that she still couldn’t believe she was sitting there typing after the ordeal.
