A passphrase adds an advanced layer of protection to the Bitcoin self-custody setup you already have, with nothing to buy. Your existing funds don't move on their own. Back up the passphrase as carefully as your recovery phrase, then send them across.

Lose the passphrase and the funds are gone, even if you still hold your recovery phrase. It isn't a password you can reset, it's part of the key. Jade shows an 8 character fingerprint each session. If it doesn't match, you've typo'd. Passphrases are the BIP-39 standard, not a Jade feature, so the same one works on any wallet that supports it. Case and spaces count. Step by step setup on Jade:

Have setup passphrases on OG Jades; but needed much trial and error. No tutorials showed all steps. 1 must choose 'advanced' setup. 2 must know that 2nd icon bottom right chooses case etc. 3. must find 'bip39 passphrase' and choose 'always'. this all maybe in docs, but not clear

An easy way to create entropy offline for your passphrase is using two dice. 13 throws and you’re done for a 13 character passphrase (~67 bits of entropy) I made this PDF up if anyone is interested, I’ll make it available at tonight.

You really need a fully comprehensive set up and explanation video, step by step, going back over it as you go, reassure the process, its a frightening experience,

Does the Jade only support BIP39? It would be great if it supported other lists like EFF short/long

Worse experience in 2026 enter pass phrase by mechanical keys. Are you serious guys?

Yes, a strong passphrase can materially improve the security of a single-sig wallet but it does not change the architecture. There is still one signing authority whose loss or compromise can be catastrophic. Lose your seed backup while the signing device still works and you’ve lost redundancy. That device is now your only route to the Bitcoin and the key should be rotated. Lose the passphrase without a recoverable backup and the Bitcoin is gone. This isn’t a minor technical distinction. It’s the difference between concentrating irreversible risk in one signing authority and distributing risk across independent keys and devices so that no single failure needs to be fatal. @TheBTCAdviser

Wait so the pass phrase has to be from the wordlist too? Can’t be your own made up words? Wouldn’t your own made up words be harder to guess rather than words on a list?

deben de preocuparse los usuarios que solo tienen sus 24 palabras y alli tienen su bitcoin ? podran en el futuro, una huella digital o biometria ser esa passfrase ? Ya que si su frase la pone el usuario muy complicada un simple carácter podría hacerle perder sus fondos.

Could I use dice to input a one time only passphrase and make it at least 50 rolls long. I don't keep a copy but I instead copy the BIP85 seed after I'm in the wallet. I now have a seed that uses my entropy and the device entropy mixed in a new master seed?

If the goal is simply mixing dice entropy with Jade: roll for the first 11 or 23 words, restore/calculate on Jade, and let it pick a valid final word.

If I order, can I pick it up at a fedex?

This is actually the only thing I hate about the Blockstream Jade: how cumbersome it is to enter the passphrase. Is it really so difficult to program the existing extra button to jump to the next page or something, instead of having to loop through all the letters and screens?

Hearing you. Character-by-character entry on the 2-button devices is slow. Faster today: WordList mode if the passphrase is BIP39 words. Jade Plus is also a better screen/camera for this. We’ll pass the “extra button = next page” idea along.

how about different password combination than the BIP39 list word for Passphrase? is there any compatibility issue with other wallets?

Blockstream Jade's profile picture

No compatibility issue. A BIP39 passphrase is not limited to the word list. On Jade, use Manual entry for any letters, numbers, or symbols. WordList is just a faster option if you choose BIP39 words. It is the BIP39 standard, so the same passphrase works on any wallet that supports it, but it must match exactly. Case and spaces count. It is not a resettable password.
