Context/Details: On August 13, 2023, a MiG-23UB, a Soviet-era jet, crashed during the Thunder Over Michigan air show at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti Charter Township, Michigan. The incident occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. The jet, part of the show, experienced an issue and burst into flames, leading to the crash in the parking lot of the Waverly on the Lake apartments in Belleville. Before the crash, the pilot of the MiG-23 reportedly noticed that the aircraft was losing power. Unable to correct the issues, the pilot and a crew member decided to eject from the aircraft. Both were transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution. The pilot suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries, while the second person aboard had mild injuries. Fortunately, no one at the air show or the apartment complex was injured. The Red Cross was on the scene to assist residents of the Waverly Apartment Complex who were temporarily displaced by the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the crash, and it is expected to take several months to determine why the engine failed. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, whose district includes Belleville and Ypsilanti, released a statement expressing relief that both pilots were safe and that there were no human injuries.
