After a very long, and quite active Summer, that is all about to change, with a much quieter pattern coming in through this week and next week (perhaps longer). The large upper ridge that has been stuck over the Southern U.S. is likely to retreat back West again, but also broaden out, leading to much more quiescent flow across much of the CONUS. Some isolated severe weather may occur late this week, but probabilities for organized severe weather will remain on the lower-end for the next 7-10 (or more) days.

What a day of severe weather across the Inland NW and the Cascades! Take a look at the satellite loop (with lightning strikes) of the entire day via the CoD Weather Data site. An incredible amount of lightning for the Pacific Northwest, and an excellent severe wx forecast!! #wawx #orwx

Severe weather conditions continue to affect parts of the Western Cape, with residents urged to travel only if absolutely necessary due to strong winds, dangerous sea conditions and ongoing storm damage. Storm Ingunn is an exceptional storm. Earlier a gust of 155mph was recorded by a Landsverk weather station in the Faroe Islands - this is far stronger than any gust that The Great 1987 Storm threw at the UK!
