Early American settlers built their houses in the middle of their claim at first, putting them far from their neighbors. Later the settlers would build their houses near the intersection of their neighbor's homesteads so all the houses were built at the four corners. So they could help each other.

The idea is to produce enough as a group that everyone makes enough stuff that you can cover each other's asses.
