That's exactly what you're seeing now. In addition to burning liquid fuel inside the test rocket, the rocket's walls, made of a special plastic, are also burned, effectively adding a little more fuel. The idea itself isn't new, but the key is that in this case, researchers from the University of Glasgow managed to create a setup in which the body would remain stable, rather than warping, during combustion.
