A scratchy conversation + I interrupt too much but I don’t understand how ⁦Rachel Reeves⁩ can achieve her NHS objectives without A LOT more money. The Gordon Brown changes more than doubled health expenditure. Surely she needs tax or borrowing? ⁦The Rest Is Politics⁩

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics She seemed a bit tetchy and evasive

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics Yes - there is a bit of a problem with promising not to raise taxes in any of the normal ways but also to not borrow any more money. Unless Labour plans a return to austerity, I don’t see how any of this works.

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics Funding the NHS ambitions without significant tax hikes or borrowing seems like a mathematical impossibility, given historical spending precedents.

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics I'm no economist, so I'm hoping Labour know what they're doing. But this interview is worrying: Reeves' response is defensive, then evasive - not calm and assured with details, or happy to answer clarifying questions... 'how can you pay for it?' is a very reasonable question!

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics She completely schooled you. You took offence at it, being lectured and outsmarted by a woman.

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics I guess I’m being schooled because I am not following what she is saying - can you explain? How is she proposing to pay for the transformation of the NHS - and find what is presumably upwards of 50 billion pounds?

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics I would say the significant concept about where that money is within the NHS is the one that has any just starting to be addressed. They will need to be some pump priming.

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics The thing is, instead of answering the question Rachel kept exclaiming how bad Tories were - yes, they were bad, but that is irrelevant here. Just answer the question! And the whole "your party" thing just felt like defending herself by launching an attack.

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics NO. Neither tax nor 'borrowing' fund the NHS. Government funds its spending by issuing £ sterling, always.

@RachelReevesMP @RestIsPolitics I thought you asked very pertinent questions. I wish more journalists would question more. You were right and she predictably had no idea how to reply without that classic tactic of - answer a question by refusing to answer, but instead ask a pointless one.
